CSUN Faces Azusa Pacific and CSU Bakersfield, Hosts UC San Diego in Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Water Polo (5-10) returns to action this weekend with three games over a two-day period. The Matadors travel to Azusa Pacific to compete in a three-team tournament on Saturday. At 10 a.m., CSUN faces the host Cougars and at 1 p.m., the Matadors square off with the No. 24 CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. On Sunday, CSUN hosts No. 12 UC San Diego in its 2016 home opener at Matador Pool at 12 p.m.

The Matadors look to end a five-game skid after going 0-4 in last weekend's UC Irvine Invitational. CSUN dropped the opener to top-ranked USC, 13-3, and lost three tightly-contests matches to Arizona State, 8-4, Loyola Marymount, 8-5, and San Diego State, 8-6.

Madeleine Sanchez scored six goals including registering a goal in all four matches over the weekend. On the season, Sanchez continues to rack up a multitude of goals as she has pushed her total to 35. She is also second on the team in steals (25) and third in assists (14).

Paula Abellan Garcia, Amy Yule, Katelyn Fairchild and Taitum Herrington each posted a pair of scores at the UCI Invite. Second on the team in scoring, Yule continues to be a force at the center position, totaling 18 goals through 15 matches. Fairchild and Abellan Garcia have both reached double figures in goals as the duo has scored 11 and 10 respectively. Fairchild is also sporting a team-high 33 steals and 19 assists while Abellan Garcia has 10 steals. A senior team captain, Herrington has six goals to go along with 10 steals and six field blocks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Niki Van Vugt performed strong in front of the cage at UCI, racking up 39 saves combined in the four matches. Against the Aztecs last Sunday, she stopped a career-high 14, giving her 114 on the season.

The Matadors own winning records all-time against all three of their opponents this weekend. CSUN leads Azusa Pacific 5-0, CSU Bakersfield, 18-3, and UC San Diego 12-6. At the UCSB Winter Invite earlier this season, the Matadors posted a 14-12 victory over Azusa Pacific as Yule netted a team-high five tallies. At the same invitational, the Matadors dropped a 10-9 decision to UC San Diego despite a five-goal performance from Sanchez.

CSUN has won seven-straight home openers dating back to 2009. Sunday's contest at Matador Pool will also be the first ever meeting between the Matadors and Tritons played at CSUN.

APU is 5-7 this season and heads into weekend play winners of five of its last six matches. Last week, the Cougars earned a pair of victories at Cal Lutheran defeating Grove City, 14-3, and the host Regals, 10-6. On Saturday, APU visited Redlands and went 1-1, falling to Long Beach State, 12-5, and earning a victory against Redlands, 13-4. Sophomore attacker Britt Harris leads the team with 24 goals and 18 steals while senior Alba Espinar is second in scoring with 22 tallies.Â

The Roadrunners are posting an 8-9 record this season after going 4-0 at the Cal Lutheran Tina Finali Invitational. CSUB defeated the likes of Villanova, 11-6, Redlands, 23-6, Cal Lutheran, 9-5, and Siena, 15-3. Sophomore Ashley Paz holds the team lead in goals with 28 and junior Kirsten Jensen is sporting 23 steals, 21 assists and 17 goals through 17 matches. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Wahlstrom has amassed the most time in net with over 360:00 and has registered 128 saves.

The Tritons own a 9-6 mark in 2016. At the UCI Invitational, UCSD finished 11th at the tournament and posted victories over Loyola Marymount, 9-8, and Pacific, 9-6. UC Davis edged the Tritons on day one of the tournament, 8-7, and Arizona State posted a 9-5 victory over UCSD last Sunday. The Tritons have a busy weekend on tap as they travel to Claremont on Friday to face four teams over a two-day span before taking on CSUN on Sunday afternoon. Junior Alexis Wieseler leads the team with 35 goals while junior Lauren Boyer has netted 24 on the season.Â
