NORTHRIDGE, CA---
No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (6-12) fell in its 2016 home opener to the No. 12 UC San Diego Tritons on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool. Emily Fuller scored twice and goalkeeper Niki Van Vugt posted 10 saves but the Matadors were unable to keep pace with the Triton offense in the contest.
Â
The Matadors struck first in the opening minute of the match on a tally from Amy Yule to take the early lead. After UCSD tied the game up seconds later, Katelyn Fairchild put CSUN back on top with a goal at the 5:29 mark of the period.
Â
Trailing by one, UCSD would go on a run to end the period to build an advantage. The Tritons tied the game with 3:51 left in the first and Julia Kirkland cashed in on a pair of scores in the final 2:41 to give UCSD a 4-2 edge after one quarter.
Â
The Tritons pushed the lead to 5-2 with another tally early in the second quarter before Fuller ended the run with a goal a minute later. Kirland hit the netting again with 4:26 left on the clock and a goal from Laurel Kistler pushed the advantage to 7-3. Despite a late score from Shannon Hovanesian, the Matadors entered halftime trailing 8-4.
Â
The Matadors could not make up any ground in the early stages of the third, as three more goals including a fourth score from Kirkland gave UCSD its biggest lead at 11-4.
Â
CSUN would battle back with a pair of scores to cut into the deficit to close out the third. Madeliene Sanchez took advantage of a 5-meter penalty shot opportunity to cut the deficit to six and Fuller punched in her second of the day with 2:48 left to play in the quarter.
Â
In the fourth, CSUN struggled to get its offense rolling as the Matadors went scoreless over the final 8:00. The Tritons added two more goals in the final period to seal the win.
Â
Alexis Elias had two assists in the match, and both McKenzie Pollei and Sanchez had two steals.
