CSUN Wins Double Point, Highlighted by Victory at No. 1 Draw
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (8-10, 2-3 Big West) lost 4-3 to No. 65 UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference match. The Matadors captured the doubles point against UCSB, but the Gauchos prevailed with four victories in singles action to edge CSUN in league play.Â
Juniors Kristen Poei and Mickey Hsu picked up arguably their biggest win of the season in the No. 1 doubles draw, toppling UCSB's Paulina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic 6-4. The Gaucho duo entered the match ranked No. 16 in the nation and had not lost the doubles' point in their last five matches.Â
After Poei and Hsu's win, Skyla Alcon and Vivian Lin clinched the early 1-0 advantage with a 7-6 (4) decision in the No. 2 doubles match. Hsu and Poei improved to 8-8 on the season while Alcon and Lin are now 9-8 on the year.Â
In singles action, the Matadors won at No. 4 behind Alcon and at No. 5 behind Kim to tie the match at 3-3 and leave it up to the sixth draw. Kim improved to 7-8 in her sophomore season while Alcon is now 9-7 as a freshman.Â
The sixth draw was the only singles contest to go to a decisive third set. Mari Taslagyan won the first set 7-5 and nearly had the second set in a tiebreaker before ultimately succumbing. The third set went to UCSB and so did the match victory.Â
The Matadors will make the voyage to Honolulu for their next match, taking on the Rainbow Wahine on Friday, April 8. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. in Hawai'i.Â
