Hawai'i Native Skyla Alcon Wins Singles Match for Matadors
HONOLULU --- The CSUN women's tennis team (8-11, 2-4 Big West) lost 6-1 to Hawai'i on Friday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. Freshman Skyla Alcon, a native of Kapolei, HI, won her fourth-seeded singles match to give CSUN its only point of the contest.Â
In her first match back in her home state, Alcon won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1, to improve her overall record to 10-7 and her Big West record to 4-2. She has won eight of her last 10 matches and leads the Matadors in singles victories.Â
Doubles action saw another native Hawaiian post a victory for CSUN. Kristen Poei, a junior from Honolulu, and teammate Mickey Hsu won their No. 1 doubles draw 6-3. The tandem is now 9-8 on the season and 3-2 in Big West play. However, Hawai'i won the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in the second doubles draw.Â
Several singles matches went to a decisive third set, but the Matadors could not prevail in either. Hsu, who lost her No. 1 draw, and Mari Taslagyan, who lost at No. 6, fell in three sets against the Rainbow Wahine. Â Kiryang Kim suffered her first loss since Mar. 9, falling in a second-set tiebreaker that finished 8-6.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, April 16 with a Big West match at UC Irvine. First serve from Orange County is slated for 11 a.m.Â
