CSUN Tennis Falls 5-2 at UC Irvine

Junior Kristen Poei Wins in Singles and Doubles for CSUN
IRVINE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (8-12, 2-5 Big West) lost 5-2 at UC Irvine Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference match. Junior Kristen Poei won her singles match in straight sets, including a tiebreaker victory in the first set, and teamed with Mickey Hsu to help CSUN claim the doubles point in a loss to the Anteaters.
With two weeks remaining until the Big West Championships, CSUN took on UC Irvine in a match with tournament seeding implications. The Matadors started strong, winning the doubles point by taking two out of the three draws.
Poei and Hsu won 7-5 in the No. 1 draw to open the scoring, improving to 10-8 on the year. Mari Taslagyan and Kiryang Kim won their third draw 6-4 to claim the initial point. The tandem improved to 9-4 on the season with the victory.Â
In singles play, Poei won 7-6 (3) and 6-4 in her No. 4 draw to improve to 8-8 on the season. Taslagyan went to three sets in her No. 6 draw but lost the tiebreaker after UC Irvine had been assured the victory. Otherwise, the Matadors fell in straight sets as UC Irvine won the five points, although Vivian Lin and and Skyla Alcon both lost 7-5 in the second of their defeat.Â
The Matadors have one match remaining with before the Big West Tournament, which runs from April 27-30 in Indian Wells, CA. CSUN will travel to UC Davis to face the Aggies in another contest that could affect tournament seeding. The Matadors and Aggies will meet on April 23 in Davis at 11 a.m.
