Matadors Finish Sixth as They Prepare for Big West Championships
Juniors Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei improved to 11-8 on the year and won their fifth-straight doubles match with a 6-1 victory in the No. 1 draw. The duo is 8-2 over their last 10 matches and were 5-2 against Big West opposition this year.
In No. 2 doubles, junior Vivian Lin and freshman Skyla Alcon registered a 6-4 victory to lock up the early advantage for CSUN. The duo is 10-9 on the year and went 4-3 against Big West opposition.Â
"Vivian and Skyla set the tone  by coming back from down 3-0 in their doubles match," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "Their energy gave us the lift we needed to play well as a team."Â
In singles action, the Matadors won the first three matches to finish to clinch the victory. Playing in the top draw, Hsu won 6-4 and 6-1 to improve to 10-10 on the season and 3-5 against Big West opposition.Â
The next Matador to finish was junior Mari Taslagyan, who won her No. 6 draw 6-0 and 6-2. She is also 10-10 on the year and 3-5 against Big West foes.Â
Sophomore Kiryang Kim was the final Matador to be victorious in singles. She won her fifth draw, 6-3 and 6-0, to improve to 8-10 on the season and 4-4 against Big West opponents. She is 7-3 over her last 10 singles matches.Â
Alcon was the third Matador to finish the regular season with 10 singles victories, although she was unsuccessful Saturday. The victory over the Aggies was CSUN's first true road victory this season.Â
With the regular season over, attention now turns squarely onto the Big West Championships which run from April 27-30 in Indian Wells, CA. The Matadors are the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 Cal State Fullerton in a Quarterfinal Match on Thursday, April 28 at approximately 8 a.m.Â
