Matadors Finish Sixth at Big West Championship

CSUN improved each round and wound up posting team rounds of 318-316-312 for a tournament total of 946. The Matadors' sixth place finish was two spots better than their 2015 finish at the conference championship.
"This is an improvement from last year's conference finish," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "We have enjoyed some good momentum and good finishes this spring aside from this particular event, and that's what's important. We know we want to be in the winner's circle next year and are looking forward to continuing our improvement this summer."
Freshman Cake Phuchanbanchob concluded a solid freshman season with a top 15 finish. Phuchanbanchob had four birdies on Tuesday and fired a one-over 73 to move up seven spots into a tie for 11th. By finishing 11th, Phuchanbanchob has CSUN's best finish since Clariss Guce finished tied for first in 2014.
Junior Cesilie Hagen, who was firmly in the top 20 through two rounds, struggled Tuesday to final round eight-over 80 and dropped into 22nd place at 20-over 236. Hagen was three-over after nine holes but had four bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine to finish at five-over.
The rest of the CSUN team finished in a bunch between 28th and 30th. Ysabel Tran, who also had a solid freshman season, had a nine-over 81 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 28th at 26-over 242. Sophomore Shenna DeLeon, competing in her first conference championship, had her best round of the tournament Tuesday as a final round 78 left her tied for 29th at 27-over 243. Senior Arinda Bhanaraksa rounded out the squad as she posted a final round 85 to finish tied for 30th at 28-over 244.  Â
