Sophomore Kiryang Kim Wins Decisive Singles Point
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (10-12) defeated Cal State Fullerton 4-3 Thursday morning in a Big West Tournament quarterfinal. The Matadors and Titans engaged in a lengthy, tight contest that saw CSUN advance based on winning the doubles point and a three-set victory by Kiryang Kim in the No. 5 singles draw.Â
"This was an unbelievable college tennis match. Cal State Fullerton is a tremendous team that competes for everything and it was great to see our team match that fight," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "We look forward to playing a very good UCSB team tomorrow and are pumped for the opportunity."Â
On a team with four juniors in the singles line-up, it was a pair of underclassmen who helped No. 6 CSUN pull off the upset of No. 3 Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors avenged a 5-2 loss to the Titans in March. CSUN had a pair of match points in doubles play that day, but failed to convert. That was not the case Thursday morning.Â
Kim won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the fifth draw to complete the upset. Freshman Skyla Alcon also contributed a singles victory, toppling her opponent in the third draw. Kim improved to 9-10 overall and she has now eight of her last 11 singles matches. Alcon improved to 11-9 overall and is tied for the team lead in singles wins.Â
"Skyla turned the tables on her opponent from their earlier meeting this season and has grown so much as a collegiate player," Victor said. "Mari also reversed the results of her match against Cal State Fullerton in March and I cannot be more proud of Ki (Kiryang Kim) and Mari for working throug adversity all day."
The third and final CSUN winner in singles was junior Mari Taslagyan, who rallied for a three-set victory in the No. 6 draw. She overcame a 6-1 loss in the first set to win 6-1 and 6-4 in the second and third set to tie the match at 3-3. Taslagyan improved to 11-10 with the win, tying Alcon for the team lead in singles victories.Â
In doubles action, the Matadors earned the point after Alcon and Vivian Lin won their No. 2 match 7-6 (11-9). Taslagyan and Kim also teamed up for an impressive victory in No. 3 doubles, winning 6-1. Alcon and Lin improved to 11-9 on the season while Taslagyan and Kim moved to 10-5 on the year.Â
"Vivian and Skyla had several match points and then went down several match points, but stayed strong under the pressure," Victor added.Â
Although Mickey Hsu, Kristen Poei and Lin were not victorious Thursday, they will have a chance for redemption Friday morning as CSUN takes on No. 2 UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Semifinal with first serve slated for approximately 9 a.m.Â
