SIMI VALLEY, CA - The CSUN men's golf team is in the thick of the team race while Tim Snyder and Felix Mory are both in the top 10 after one round of the Big West Championship Monday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
The Matadors are currently in a three-way tie with Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside at 294. UC Santa Barbara carded an opening round one-under 287 and holds the team lead by five shots through 18 holes.
"I'm definitely pleased with how we played today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "I told the guys last night we can't win the tournament Monday but we sure can lose it. We didn't finish great today but we're still in a good position, the field is pretty wide open."
Senior Tim Snyder played virtually error-free golf on Monday as he is tied for fifth after posting a one-under 71. Snyder bogeyed the opening hole but quickly rebounded with a birdie at No. 2 and then played even the remainder of the front nine. He opened the back nine with a bogey but again bounced back with a birdie three at No. 11 and then had two more birdies to close out his round.
Snyder heads into the second round just two shots behind UCSB's Zach Smith who leads at three-under 69.
Felix Mory was in good shape to equal Smith or pass him as the CSUN junior was also three-under heading to the 18th hole. But his second shot resulted in a tough lie beyond the green and with some bad luck from there, Mory wound up in a triple bogey eight which dropped the junior into a tie for seventh at even-par 72. Prior to the 18th, Mory had three birdies and 14 pars without a single bogey in round one.
Sophomore Luis Calderon, tied for 17th, is poised for a solid conference finish after posting a two-over 72 in round one. Calderon was three over after six holes but birdies at No. 7 and No. 8 pulled him back to one-over at the turn. He then played the back nine at one-over to head into round two just two shots out of the top 10.
Also for CSUN, Tavit Garabedian is tied for 35th at five-over 77 and Sam Engel is tied for 39th at seven-over 79.
"It all comes down to consistency over the next two rounds," added Bracken. "We need to keep making positive things happen."
CSUN will tee off the second round Tuesday morning from the 10th tee at 7:30 a.m.
