Another Slow Start Does in CSUN at UC Irvine

Freshman Lauren Shymkewicz Scored Career-High 12 Points
IRVINE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (8-9, 1-2 Big West) lost 77-52 to UC Irvine Wednesday night in a Big West Conference game at The Bren Events Center. Freshman Lauren Shymkewicz scored a career-high 12 points and sophomore Channon Fluker posted her 10th double-double of the season, but CSUN could not overcome a slow start as its five-game winning streak against the Anteaters came to an end.Â
CSUN trailed 24-6 after 10 minutes of action Wednesday. The Matadors shot 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from the field and 0-for-9 from 3-point range in the opening period. The second period was not much kinder to CSUN as the Matadors were outscored 20-14 despite shooting 45.5 percent from the field in the 10 minutes.Â
In the second half, CSUN scored the first eight points of the third period to pull within 16 points. That was as close as the Matadors would get as UCI continued to shoot the ball well. The 25-point loss is the largest defeat CSUN has suffered against UCI in the all-time series.Â
Shymkewicz had a strong fourth period for CSUN, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the final frame. She added four offensive boards in 15 minutes of work off the bench.Â
Fluker finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for her 22nd career double-double. She added three blocked shots and two assists in 27 minutes of work.Â
Serafina Maulupe finished with 11 points and three 3-pointers in 24 minutes. Emily Cole finished with six points off a pair of 3-pointers and Hayley Tanabe tied a career high with seven assists.Â
The Anteaters finished with a 37-31 advantage in rebounding and scored 18 points off 15 CSUN turnovers. Andee Ritter led all players with 25 points, making five 3-pointers. UCI shot an even 50 percent (29-of-58) from the field compared to 35.1 percent (20-of-57) for CSUN. The Matadors finished at 20 percent (5-of-25) from 3-point range and missed their first 10 attempts from downtown.Â
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a road game at UC Davis. Tip off between the Matadors and Aggies is slated for 2 p.m. from The Pavilion.
