Matadors Return Home Jan. 21 vs. Cal Poly at 4 p.m.
DAVIS, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (8-10, 1-3 Big West) lost 81-65 to UC Davis Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference game at The Pavilion. Sophomore Channon Fluker had 19 points and seven rebounds while Serafina Maulupe had 14, but the Matadors could not stop a potent UC Davis offense and lost their third-straight league game.Â
Looking for just their second win at UC Davis since 2005, the Matadors could not slow down an Aggie team that finished at just under 50 percent (49.3, 33-of-67) from the field. From inside the 3-point arc, UCD finished 25-of-42 (59.5 percent) for the game.Â
Fluker rebounded from a tough stretch to finish 9-of-16 from the field. She added a team-high seven rebounds and tied a career high with three assists. Maulupe finished with 14 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. She added three assists as well in defeat.Â
Both teams enjoyed a fruitful first half. The Aggies shot 56 percent from the field compared to 46 percent for the Matadors. Fluker put the Matadors ahead briefly in the first period, but UCD responded with a 12-0 run to take a 17-7 lead and eventually carried a 24-19 advantage after 10 minutes.Â
In the second period, a floater from Terrin Sullivan drew CSUN to within 28-27, but another UC Davis run (8-3) kept the Aggies ahead and UC Davis settled for a 46-40 advantage at the break. Maulupe had 11 points after 20 minutes while Fluker had nine and Cole had eight.Â
Fluker opened the third period with a basket and Maulupe later canned a 3-pointer to draw CSUN within four points. However, UCD responded with another run to take 59-49 lead midway through the period and held a 66-54 advantage after 30 minutes of work.Â
In the fourth, CSUN cut the lead back to four (68-64), but the Aggies responded with a 13-1 run as the Matadors went scoreless over the next six-plus minutes of the game.
The Matadors finished at 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from 3-point range. CSUN held a narrow 38-34 advantage in rebounding, but had 12 turnovers to six for UC Davis. The Aggies had 26 points off those CSUN miscues.Â
CSUN has a week off before returning to Big West action, hosting Cal Poly on Jan. 21. Tip off from The Matadome is slated for 4 p.m.Â
