No. 11 Oregon Defeats CSUN 91-43 In Preseason WNIT Opener
11/10/2017 7:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore.—No. 11 Oregon defeated CSUN 91-43 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
Â
Leading 4-2 with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter, the Ducks used a 15-2 spurt that would result in a 23-6 lead after 10 minutes. Oregon held the Matadors to one field goal in the opening stanza. CSUN scored six of the first 11 points of the second quarter before Oregon used an 8-0 run to increase the advantage to 36-12 midway through the second. The Ducks would take a 53-20 advantage into halftime.
Â
The Ducks limited CSUN to 26.7% shooting (12-of-45) for the game. Oregon made 21 steals on the way to scoring 36 points off of 29 Matador turnovers. CSUN would shoot more free throws (25-16).
Â
Five Ducks scored in double figures led by Sabrina Ionescu who scored 15. Ruthy Hebard and Satou Sabally each scored 11. Mallory McGwire and Maite Cazorla both scored 10. Eight of the 10 CSUN players who saw action scored at least two points. Channon Fluker paced CSUN with nine points and nine rebounds.
Â
"Playing against a really good Oregon team that is well-coached and executes very well is a great measuring stick.," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "We have to learn from tonight and then put it behind us. There are things we have to get better at as a group. I think sometimes the hard lessons are the ones that last the longest. We know where we are. This doesn't change the fact we know where we can end up, but it makes us look in the mirror which is always a good thing."
Â
With the loss, the Matadors fall into 1-of-2 Consolation bracket quads of the tournament. The site of the next two CSUN games in the Preseason WNIT is expected to be determined on Saturday, Nov. 11. Â Â
