Ramos' Career High 23 Leads CSUN Past Fresno State
12/2/2017 4:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Junior Claudia Ramos scored a career high 23 points to lead four CSUN players in double figures as the Matadors defeated Fresno State 85-72 in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Matadome.
Â
CSUN made 11-of-19 field goal attempts in the first quarter to take a 25-18 lead. The Matadors turned up the defense in the second quarter, allowing just four Fresno State field goals (in 19 attempts). CSUN would make 5-of-7 from three-point range in the second, shoot 50% (6-of-12) from the field, and 8-of-10 from the free throw line as the Matadors outscored the Bulldogs 25-9. CSUN led by 23 at halftime (50-27).
Â
CSUN would take its largest lead of the game, 58-30, on a Channon Fluker basket with 6:30 to go. Led by Candice White who scored 11 of her game high 34 points in the quarter, Fresno State responded with a 22-2 run. The Bulldogs would make 10-of-13 shots in the third as Fresno State made it a 60-52 game.
Â
Fluker opened the fourth with a three-point play for CSUN. The Bulldogs continued to surge, chipping away at the Matadors' lead. A Maddi Utti layup with 4:56 remaining created a 71-65 game. A Fluker basket combined with Ramos hitting three free throws after being fouled on an attempt from beyond the three-point arc quickly pushed the advantage back into double figures.
Â
A White jumper at 3:29 made it 76-67 in favor of CSUN. The Matadors used a stingy defense down the stretch, holding Fresno State to five points in the final 3+ minutes to head to the victory.
Â
Ramos ended the day with a career best six three-pointers (in 11 attempts). In a career high 38 minutes, the 6-0 native of Mexico added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Her previous high in points was 18 against Penn State on Nov. 27, 2015. Fluker would record her 36th career double-double with 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Serafina Maulupe scored 11 points. Tessa Boagni tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and two steals.
Â
White was 11-of-23 from the field, 5-of-9 from three-point range to score her 34. She added seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Utti was the only other Bulldog in double-figures with 13 points.
Â
"There were definitely some positives out there today," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "Offensively, I thought we did a good job of taking care of the basketball. I thought our defense did a real good job in the first half of creating chances for our offense. Overall, our guards need to do a good job of controlling the tempo and learn how to continue how to attack even if we have a large lead. We will take the win and look and see what we can do to be better on Thursday."
Â
The Matadors (2-6) travel to San José State (2-5) Thursday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CSUN returns home Dec. 18 when the Matadors host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m.
