Matadors Travel to Stockton, CA for Five Games Feb. 24-26
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (2-7) split its final day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, defeating Saint Mary's 3-0 before falling 2-1 to Loyola Marymount Sunday. In the victory over the Gaels, the Matadors cracked six doubles and Taylor Troost tossed a complete-game shutout. In the finale, Katie Hooper hit her second home run of the season, but the Lions rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory.Â
Saint Mary's Recap
Troost (1-2) delivered a quality start to help lift the Matadors past the Gaels. The sophomore scattered six hits and one walk to go with four strikeouts. She retired 12 batters on ground balls as the Matadors played a clean game defensively.Â
Offensively, Savannah Horvath had two doubles while Hooper, Taylor Glover, Mackenzie Babbitt and Taylor Nate also collected a two-base hit. CSUN struck early, getting an RBI double from Horvath in the top of the first that scored Glover. In the top of the third, CSUN reeled off three-straight doubles as Babbitt started the inning, scored on Glover's hit and Horvath brought home the senior.Â
With two stolen bases in the game, Glover is up to 75 for her career, the fifth-most in Big West Conference history. Over the course of the weekend, she also moved into fifth in program history in hits (231).Â
LMU Recap
In the tournament finale, Hooper broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. The deep fly was her second of the season and 26th of her career. At the plate, Horvath and Jessica Alexander had the other base hits for CSUN.Â
However, the Lions rallied for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory. CSUN starter Rebecca Bell (0-2) was saddled with the loss despite a solid performance in the circle. She worked around five hits and four walks in six innings of work, but an error and a wild pitch in the seventh doomed the Matadors.Â
CSUN continues its slate of non-conference tournaments with five games part of the Libby Matson Classic in Stockton, CA on the campus of the University of the Pacific from Feb. 24-26. The Matadors will play two games with Seattle and Sacramento State while facing the host Tigers once.Â
