NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team opened play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert Friday as the Matadors are 11th after an opening round 302.
The tournament, being played The Classic Club in Palm Desert, has 22 teams including four teams ranked in the top 35.
Felix Mory and Trym Falch are tied for 15th at one-over 73. Mory was two-under after nine holes but had three bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine to finish at three-over. Falch was two-over after nine but closed with three birdies on his final six holes to finish at one-under.
The CSUN duo is six strokes behind the leader Norman Xiong of Oregon who fired a five-under 67.
Also for the Matadors, Sam Engel is tied for 70th at five-over 77 while Tavit Garabedian and Tomas Skajem are tied for 90th at seven-over 79.Â
"We played really well on the front nine but the wind kicked up on the back nine and unfortunately we compounded some our mistakes," said head coach Jim Bracken. "Tomorrow is a new day and we're right there so I'm hoping for a good round."
Oregon leads the team competition as the 10th-ranked Ducks fired a six-under 282 to lead by seven shots.
CSUN will tee off the second round at 7:50 a.m. of the first tee.
