CSUN Pulls Away from Hawai'i in Second Half
2/4/2017 6:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Sophomore Claudia Ramos Scores Season-High 17 Points in Win
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Sophomore Claudia Ramos scored a season-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, to help lift the CSUN women's basketball team (11-11, 4-4 Big West) to a 67-56 victory over Hawai'i Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference contest at The Matadome. Ramos connected on a pair of key 3-pointers in the third period as the Matadors pulled away from the Rainbow Wahine in the second half for their third-straight league win.Â
Leading by two at halftime, CSUN went up by four early in the third period before Hawai'i scored six-straight points to take a 32-30 lead. After Channon Fluker connected on a free throw, Ramos then canned a 3-pointer to give CSUN a 34-32 advantage. She then drained another trey on the next possession to put CSUN ahead by five. Leading 42-37, the Matadors closed the third period on a 8-0 run to lead 50-42 after 30 minutes of action.Â
In the fourth, CSUN kept the Rainbow Wahine from mounting a rally and although Hawai'i would get to within eight points, that was with 26 seconds left to play. CSUN's biggest lead was 17, which came around the five-minutes mark of the period.Â
Ramos was an efficient 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from downtown to set a new season high for field goals and 3-pointers. She added three free throws, two rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes of action.Â
Fluker recorded her 14th double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She had seven boards on both the offensive and defensive glass and had a block and a steal in 23 minutes of work. She is averaging 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game for the season.Â
Serafina Maulupe was the third Matador to score in double-figures, posting 10 points. She had a pair of 3-pointers to give her 53 for the season, the ninth-most in program history, and 90 for her CSUN career, tying her with Janae Sharpe for 10th in program history.Â
CSUN started the game strong, building a 20-14 lead by the end of the first period. However, the second was tough for the Matadors on the offensive end and they managed just eight points as Hawai'i cut into the lead. The Matadors eventually settled for a 28-26 advantage at halftime.Â
The Matadors finished the game at 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point range. Hawai'i shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from downtown. CSUN held a 55-34 advantage in rebounding and freshman Lauren Shymkewicz pulled down a season-high nine boards, including five on the offensive end.Â
CSUN outscored Hawai'i 34-16 in the paint and had 16 second-chance points. Eliza Matthews finished with seven points, eight rebounds and two assists for the Matadors while Cheyenne Allen had four points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.Â
CSUN hits the road next week for a pair of Big West games. On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Matadors travel to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. contest and then head to UC Riverside two days later for a 5 p.m. meeting.
