Taylor Nate and Savannah Horvath Both Hit Home Runs in Win
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Taylor Nate blasted her first home run of the season and junior Savannah Horvath added her fourth as the CSUN softball team (14-10) defeated CSU Bakersfield 10-3 in six innings Sunday evening in the final game of the CSUN/LMU Tournament at Matador Diamond. Senior Karlie Habitz added a two-run double and sophomore Taylor Troost tossed 3.1 inning of relief as the Matadors and Roadrunners resumed a rivalry that dates back to both squads' Division II days.Â
Nate tied a career high with three runs scored and hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second after also scoring a run in the bottom of the first. She also added her eighth stolen base of the season and became just the fifth Matador in program history to reach 40 for her career. For the season, Nate is batting .377 with a team-high 20 runs scored and currently owns an 11-game hitting streak while also reaching base safely in 17-straight games.Â
Horvath also had a solo home run, depositing the 26th of her career over the fence in left in the sixth inning. In the first inning with two outs, she smacked a ball that was misplayed by a Roadrunner infielder and allowed two runs to score. Habitz roped a two-run double in the Matadors' six-run sixth inning, her second of the season. For the year, Horvath has four doubles, a triple, 14 RBIs and six stolen bases while Habitz has two home runs and eight RBIs.Â
Senior Taylor Glover went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a sac bunt and an RBI while freshman Jessica Alexander scored two runs, stole two bases and drew two walks. Katie Hooper, Madison Fleming and Mackenzie Babbitt also had RBIs in the victory and Fleming added a sac bunt.Â
Racing to beat a setting sun, CSUN used a six-run fourth inning to blow the game open. Senior Tara Kliebenstein singled to start the inning and moved to second as Nate drew a walk. Hooper was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Fleming drove in the first run of the frame with a sac fly. Â With two outs, Babbitt singled to center to score Alexander and Habitz then drove home Hooper and Babbitt with her double.Â
Troost (5-3) came in to relieve CSUN starter Daphne Pofek in the third and allowed two hits and a run with four strikeouts to earn the win.Â
The Matadors return to action on Friday, Mar. 17 with a game against Weber State at 8:30 a.m. at Matador Diamond. A complete tournament schedule of games at Matador Diamond can be found here.Â
