CSUN Baseball (10-7) continues its nine-game homestand this weekend with a four-game series against visiting Saint Mary's at Matador Field. The series will start on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday set to start at 10 a.m. The teams will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Live audio will be available for each game in the series along with a video broadcast of Sunday's series finale on the CSUN Sports Network with Ross Porter calling all the action.Â
The Matadors have gone 4-1 in their longest homestand of the season. After defeating Holy Cross last Wednesday, the Matadors took three of four games from Purdue over the weekend. Behind a mix of hot bats and quality pitching, the Matadors defeated the Boilermakers 16-8 in game one and 4-1 on Saturday. CSUN came-from-behind to defeat Purdue on Sunday 5-4 to win the series but dropped the finale 9-3 on Monday.
In the opener, Alvaro Rubalcaba became the first Matador in nine seasons to homer three times in a single game. Rubalcaba also drove in seven runs in the win and finished the series with five hits and three walks. Justin Toerner enjoyed a big series as well, picking up six hits including two home runs and four RBI. Another big bat in the lineup, Kevin Riley homered twice and totaled four RBI and five runs scored.Â
Also in the series, the Matadors received strong outings from starters Samuel Myers and Tei Vanderford. Myers started the Saturday contest and pitched a gem, surrendering only one hit while striking out 10 batters across 8.1 innings. A day later, Vanderford pitched 7.2 quality innings, striking out seven batters and allowing two earned runs to record his third win.Â
Newcomer to the roster this season, Rubalcaba leads the team with a .356 average at the plate to go along with his three home runs, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored and eight walks. Filling in for Dylan Alexander as the every day catcher in the lineup, junior Albee Weiss is batting .302 with four home runs, nine runs scored and a team-leading 15 RBI. Also providing plenty of production in the RBI department, Riley has 13 RBI to go along with four home runs, 14 runs scored and a .297 batting average while Nolan Bumstead has 12 RBI, two home runs, seven runs scored and a .245 average at the plate.Â
The Matadors will send right-handed starters Andrew Weston, Myers and Vanderford in the first three games of the series while Sunday's starter will be named later in the series. Weston (3-1) possesses a 2.55 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 24.2 innings of work. Coming off his exceptional start against Purdue, Myers is posting a 1.99 ERA on the season to go along with 21 strikeouts. Rounding out the rotation, Vanderford (3-1) has a microscopic 1.19 ERA on the season along with 26 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. As a group, the starting rotation is registering a 1.85 ERA on the season while hitters have managed just a .186 average at the plate.Â
CSUN has won 10 of 15 all-time meetings in the head-to-head series with Saint Mary's. The two programs last met in 2015 in Moraga, CA where the squads split a four-game set. In the series two seasons ago, Toerner went 8-for-16 with five runs scored and two RBI while William Colantono finished 6-for-13 with four RBI. The teams last faced each other at Matador Field during the 2013 season as CSUN took three of four games.Â
