Matadors Face Quinnipiac on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (15-11) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to post a dramatic 6-5 victory over Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond as part of the Matador Classic. Taylor Nate, Savannah Horvath and Mackenzie Babbitt each had two hits in the win and Taylor Troost tossed 3.1 innings of relief as the Matadors defeated the Bears.
After Northern Colorado scored three runs in the top of the eighth, the Matadors staged a comeback to earn the walk-off win. With Tara Kliebenstein starting the inning on second because of the international tiebreaker rule, Nate singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Taylor Glover then plated Kliebenstein with an RBI single and a fielding error off the bat of Jessica Alexander loaded the bases.
Katie Hooper blasted a sac fly to right field to score Nate and Madison Fleming tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice. With Alexander on second, a fielding error off the bat of Horvath allowed Alexander to come all the way around and score the winning run.
Horvath finished 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base while Nate was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Glover finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Babbitt went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and a stolen base.
CSUN jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Horvath's RBI double scored Hooper. In the fifth, the Bears struck for a pair of runs off CSUN starter Daphne Pofek and Troost came in to relieve her with two outs in the frame.
After the Matadors squandered chances to tie the game in both the fifth and the sixth, they broke through in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. With one out, Horvath walked and then scored on Babbitt's first triple of the season.
Troost (6-4) allowed four hits and two earned runs in relief, fanning three Bears. Pofek went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs and three hits to go with three strikeouts. Glover moved into a tie for eighth in Big West Conference history with her 255th career hit and into third in CSUN history with 143rd career run.
CSUN returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 19 with a game against Quinnipiac. First pitch is slated for approximately 3:30 p.m. from Matador Diamond.
