Matadors Defeat Boise State and Santa Clara
Boise State Recap
When all the dust settled, CSUN posted a 16-1, five-inning victory over Boise State in a game that started Mar. 4 and had to be concluded on Mar. 5. CSUN collected 15 hits and five home runs and Jessica Alexander tied a school record two home runs. Karlie Habitz, Tara Kliebenstein and Taylor Glover also hit home runs and Taylor Troost (4-2) recorded her fourth win of the season.Â
Alexander had a sensational game, finishing 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. She tied a school record with the two home runs, the 35th time a Matador hit two in a game and matching teammate Madison Fleming's performance from Saturday against Weber State. Fleming also matched a career high with her three hits, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs, a triple and an RBI.Â
Glover was the third Matador to finish with three hits in the victory, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Kliebenstein finished 2-for-2 with two runs, three runs, three RBIs and a double while Habitz went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk.Â
Playing in the final game of the day Saturday, the teams resumed action on Sunday in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second. Glover quickly cleared the bases with a three-run home run and Alexander went back-to-back with a solo shot to put CSUN ahead 13-0. Later in the inning, freshman Ty Cueva recorded her first career hit and RBI with a run-scoring single and Kliebenstein added a two-run double.Â
The Broncos broke Troost's scoreless streak at 29 innings with a single run in the fifth, although it was not earned. The sophomore worked around six hits and two walks and added a strikeout. She is now 4-2 with a 2.14 ERA and a .220 opponent batting average in 39.1 innings of work.Â
In the earlier innings Saturday, the Matadors built a 9-0 lead behind home runs from Alexander, Habitz and Kliebenstein.
Fleming continued a torrid day at the plate with an RBI single in the top of the first to score Alexander. The freshman then took advantage of a Bronco error and blasted a grand slam in the second. In the third, Fleming tripled to start the inning and scored on a sac fly from Savannah Horvath. In the fourth, Kliebenstein hit a solo home run and Habitz blasted a two-run shot in the fifth that also scored Horvath.Â
Taylor Nate finished 1-for-3 with an two runs scored while Horvath added her fourth stolen base of the season. Alyssa Vazquez drew a walk and scored the first run of her CSUN career.Â
Santa Clara Recap
The Matadors engineered a comeback victory over the Broncos, overcoming an early 6-1 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second and seven in the bottom of the third to eventually claim an 11-7 victory. Alexander wrapped up a fantastic weekend by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Horvath finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs while Jessica LaPierre finished 2-for-4 with a home run. Habitz had two hits and a sac bunt and Kliebenstein added two runs scored in the win.Â
In the circle, Rebecca Bell tossed 5.1 innings of relief work to earn her second win of the season. She scattered three hits and two walks with two strikeouts after entering the game in the bottom of the second.Â
Playing as the home team in its final game in Idaho, CSUN starter Daphne Pofek had a tough first inning as Santa Clara scored four runs. Because of Matador defensive errors, none of the runs were earned but Pofek recorded one out before giving way to fellow senior Katie Chenault. The Matadors pulled one run back in the first as Nate doubled to start the inning and scored on a single from Alexander.Â
In the second, Santa Clara scored twice and chased Chenault from the circle in exchange for Bell (2-2). The senior recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout, but CSUN trailed 6-1.
In their half of the second, the Matadors struck twice. Kliebenstein walked and moved to second on a bunt from Habitz. Nate then reached on an error and she and Kliebenstein moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Glover then drove home Kliebenstein with a sac fly and Alexander plated Nate with a single to right field.Â
Bell put the Broncos down in order in the third to set the stage for a seven-run frame for the Matadors. Fleming walked to start the frame and then trotted home on Horvath's two-run home run, her third of the season and 25th of her career. LaPierre followed that up with a solo shot, the first of her CSUN career, to cut the lead to tie the game.Â
With two outs, Alexander drove home Nate and Pudi Hernandez with a single. Vazquez then doubled in the next at-bat and she and Alexander scored on a two-run single from Horvath.
Leading 10-6, CSUN added a run in the fourth on a sac fly from Nate that scored Kliebenstein. Santa Clara would pull one back in the bottom of the fourth, but Bell sealed the victory with solid outings in the sixth and seventh inning.Â
The Matadors return to action with their 2017 Home Opener on Tuesday, Mar. 7 with a doubleheader against Sacred Heart. First pitch of the first game is slated for noon from Matador Diamond.Â
