Sophomore Channon Fluker Scores Career-High 39 Points in Win
LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Sophomore Channon Fluker scored a career-high 39 points and set a new program record for points in a single season as the CSUN women's basketball team (18-13) defeated Hawai'i 71-64 Wednesday evening in a Big West Tournament Quarterfinal at the Walter Pyramid. Tessa Boagni added 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench and CSUN erased a six-point halftime deficit to advance to Friday's semifinal at the Honda Center.Â
The 2016-17 Big West Player of the Year, Fluker had a dominating game inside for CSUN. She finished 14-of-23 from the field and added 12 rebounds for her 20th double-double of the season. Midway through the third quarter, she passed Ashlee Guay to set a new school record for points in a season and currently has 560 on the season for an average of 18.1 per game. This year, she has set new single-season program records for points, field goals and rebounds.Â
Boagni had a strong game off the bench, producing her fourth double-double of the season and sixth of her career. She finished 5-of-10 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Big West Freshman of the Year Eliza Matthews was the third Matador in double-figures in rebounds, grabbing 11 boards to go with two assists.Â
After Fluker scored the game's first two baskets, Hawai'i settled down and closed the first quarter on a 13-1 run to take a 21-11 lead after 10 minutes. Turnovers hurt CSUN in the frame as its five miscues resulted in 11 points for the Rainbow Wahine.Â
In the second quarter, Hayley Tanabe hit a 3-pointer to spur a CSUN run that saw them cut the deficit to 25-21 following a three-point play from Boagni. Fluker made the final basket of the half to draw CSUN to within 35-29 after 20 minutes. Fluker had 19 points and seven rebounds at the break.Â
In the second half, CSUN came out firing and a 3-pointer from Emily Cole gave the Matadors a 40-39 lead. She hit another key 3-pointer later in the frame and CSUN held a narrow 46-45 advantage at the end of the third quarter.Â
In the fourth, Boagni opened the quarter with a basket but Hawai'i quickly tied the game with a 3-pointer. After Fluker made one of two at the free throw line, Serafina Maulupe made a 3-pointer to push CSUN ahead by four. The Rainbow Wahine would get back to within two points, but that was as close as they would get as Tanabe, Fluker and Maulupe made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.Â
Cole finished with six points, eight rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Tanabe added seven points and three assists while Maulupe had six points, a career-high seven assists and a steal in 36 minutes of work.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range. The Matadors held a 52-33 advantage in rebounds and had only five turnovers after the first quarter for a total of 10. With 20 offensive rebounds, CSUN recorded 28 points in the paint and 19 second-chance points.Â
With the win, CSUN advances to the Big West Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Mar. 9 with a contest against Long Beach State. Tip off from Honda Center is set for approximately 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.Â
