SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (25-15, 5-4 Big West) defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1 in game one before falling 4-0 in game two Saturday in a Big West Conference doubleheader at Campus Diamond. In the game one victory, Jessica Alexander tied a school record for the second time this season with two home runs while Mackenzie Babbitt had a career-high three hits and Taylor Troost was solid in relief to earn the win. In game two, the Matadors threatened several times, but could not push a run across as they lost the series to the Gauchos.Â
Alexander finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the victory. Her first deep fly of the day was a two-run blast and she then added a solo shot off the roof of the hitting complex in left. For the season, she leads the Matadors with eight home runs and is batting .320 with 33 RBIs and seven stolen bases.Â
After posting seven 2-hit games over her first year-plus with the squad, Babbitt finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Taylor Glover also had a multi-hit game in the win, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Glover batted .750 (6-for-8) over the three games against UCSB.Â
After the Gauchos struck for a 1-0 lead, Alexander put CSUN ahead 2-1 with her two-run home run in the third. In the fifth, Tara Kliebenstein led off the frame with a triple and then scored on a sac fly from Glover. Alexander then blasted a solo shot to give CSUN a 4-1 advantage.Â
In the seventh, CSUN struck for two runs to give Troost (10-5) some extra insurance. The sophomore tossed 4.2 innings of relief, scattering four hits and one walk. Rebecca Bell started the game for the Matadors and gave up six hits and one run in 2.1 innings of work.Â
Game two was a different story for CSUN. The Matadors had six hits in the game, one more than UCSB, but they left seven runners on base and could not find a timely hit to break through on the scoreboard.Â
CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (11-6) tossed all six innings and allowed three earned runs. The Gauchos struck for an unearned run in the first and then smacked a three-run home run in the third.Â
Offensively, Glover and Katie Hooper each finished 2-for-3. Glover added her ninth double of the year while Madison Fleming and Karlie Habitz each added singles.Â
The Matadors return to action next weekend to open their season-ending, seven-game homestand. CSUN will face Cal Poly in a three-game series with two games on Saturday, April 22 and a single game on April 23. The Matadors then host UCLA on April 26 before facing UC Riverside in a three-game set April 29 and 30.Â
