NORTHRIDGE, CA - Round one of the 2017 Big West Championship is in the books with the CSUN women's golf team holding down seventh place after an opening round 305 Sunday at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
The Matadors, seeking their first conference title since 2004, are 16 strokes behind first round leaders Cal Poly (289) in a tightly packed field. CSUN is also just four shots out of the top four heading into round two on Monday.
Ysabel Tran is firmly in the hunt for the individual title as the Matador sophomore fired an even-par 72 and is tied for sixth but just two strokes off the pace. UC Riverside's Jakeishya Le is the round one leader at two-under 70 while four players are tied at one-under 71.
Tran was one over after nine holes after a double bogey six at the par four eighth hole. But three birdies over her final seven holes pulled her back to one-under on the back nine and even-par for the day. Tran's 72 is the lowest for a CSUN player since Cesilie Hagen also carded a 72 in the final round of the 2014 conference championship.
Junior Kayla Yn carded her low round of the season as she posted an opening round two-over 74. Yn was even through nine poles after posting a pair of birdies before a pair of bogeys on the back nine left her at two-over for the day.
Freshman Alice Duan was even through six holes before a double bogey five at the par three seventh and a bogey at No. 8 dropped her to three-over on the front nine. A birdie and five bogeys on the back nine left her at four-over on the final nine holes and seven-over for the day. Junior Shenna DeLeon finished four-over on both the front and back nines to complete the day at eight-over 80 and is tied for 33rd while Brianna Steger is tied for for 37th at 11-over 83.
"We managed the golf course well today and got great individual efforts from Ysabel and Kayla," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "Our goals are to get better each day, whether we are in a tournament or not. We will approach the remainder of the year this way, and keep our focus on controlling what we can control."Â
CSUN will be paired with Long Beach State and UC Riverside for round two with the three teams scheduled for a 9 a.m. tee time.
