NORTHRIDGE, CA - Sophomore Ysabel Tran is tied for third while the CSUN women's golf team is eighth after two rounds of the Big West Championship Monday at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
Tran, CSUN's low scorer for the season, carried over her consistent play from Sunday's opening round. Tran was tied for sixth after carding an even-par 72 in round one before following up with a one-over 73 this afternoon which moved her into a tie for third at one-over 145.
The CSUN sophomore birdied her first hole Monday and was still one-under through eight holes when a bogey five at the par four ninth hole sent her to the back nine at even-par. Another birdie at No. 10 got her back to one-under but bogeys at the 14th and 18th holes dropped her to one-over for the day as well as the tournament.
"Ysabel is playing with poise and calmness," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "I'm very proud of her efforts so far and know this is just the beginning for her."
After posting an opening round two-over 74, junior Kayla Yn slipped to a seven-over 79 Monday which dropped her from 12th into a tie for 19th at nine-over 153. Yn had a pair of birdies on the front nine but also had two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. After making the turn at four-over, Yn had three bogeys and the rest pars on the back nine.
Junior Shenna DeLeon was the other Matador to move up on day two as she carded a five-over 77 to move into a tie for 29th at 13-over 157. DeLeon, who posted an eight-over 80 on Sunday, had one birdie and 12 pars in round two to move four spots up the leaderboard.
Freshman Brianna Steger also carded a five-over 77 in round two but remained 37th at 16-over 160. Steger, who opened with an 83 on Sunday, led CSUN with three birdies in round two while also posting nine pars. Fellow freshman Alice Duan had a rough second round as she finished at 16-over 88 dropping her into 40th at 23-over 167 for the championship.
As a team, the Matadors followed up Sunday's round of 305 with a score of 306 on Monday but CSUN was passed by Long Beach State which carded a second round 290. Cal Poly (587) maintained its team lead from day one as the Mustangs increased their lead to 10 strokes over second place UC Davis (597).
Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg fired a four-under 68 on Monday to overtake UC Riverside's Jakeishya Le for the individual lead. Edberg (-5, 139) holds a four shot lead over Le (-1, 143) and a six shot lead over both Tran and Cal Poly's Jamie Binns.
CSUN will be paired with Cal State Fullerton for Tuesday's final round which is scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. tee time.
