En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (28-18, 8-6 Big West) split a Big West Conference doubleheader with UC Riverside Saturday at Matador Diamond, winning game one 10-5 before falling 9-2 in game two. Katie Hooper had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs in game one and adding another two hits in game two. Karlie Habitz added two RBIs and a double and Daphne Pofek delivered a complete-game performance in the circle. Game two provided a different tone as the CSUN offense could not find a timely hit against the Highlanders' Jacy Boles and fell to UCR for the first time since 2012.Â
Despite committing six errors in the field, CSUN found enough offense to post a 10-5 victory in the opener Saturday. Pofek (14-7) allowed just four hits, but the six errors resulted in four unearned runs. She added two strikeouts and three walks and posted her 11th complete game of the season. Heading into her senior day, she sports a 2.22 ERA and .211 opponent batting average in 126 innings of work.Â
Offensively, Hooper added to her school record with a pair of two-base hits. She scored one run and her four RBIs increased her career total to 156, the sixth-most in Big West Conference history and she need eight more over her final seven games to set a new CSUN all-time record. Habitz picked up her third double of the year and three Matadors (Mackenzie Babbitt, Taylor Glover and Jessica Alexander) had stolen bases in the win.Â
Hooper picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the first to score Babbitt to give CSUN an early advantage. In the third, Hooper added an RBI double, Savannah Horvath picked up an RBI single and Habitz recorded an RBI ground out. Â
Leading 5-0 in the fourth, Babbitt scored when she and Glover executed a double steal and a throwing error sent the ball into left field. Hooper then smashed a two-run double to score Glover and Alexander and put CSUN ahead 8-0.Â
To their credit, the Highlanders took advantage of Matador miscues and scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth to extend the game. In their half ot the fifth, Habitz roped a double down the left field line to score Horvath and she later scored on an illegal pitch.Â
Game two had a much different tenor. The defense improved for both teams but the Matadors' offense mustered seven singles off Boles, who recorded her first career victory. CSUN also drew four walks off Boles, but wound up leaving eight runners on base.Â
Hooper and Babbitt each went 2-for-4 while Glover, Horvath and Madison Fleming each added a base hit. Babbitt had her second stolen base of the day and 11th of the season to give her 26 in her career.Â
In the circle, Taylor Troost (10-7) tossed two innings efficiently but ran into trouble in the third. The Highlanders struck for four runs and four hits in the frame, chasing Troost from the circle in exchange for Rebecca Bell.Â
UCR added four runs off two hits and saw three different Matador pitchers in the top of the sixth. Cheyenne Noli wrapped up the inning for CSUN and tossed the final two innings of work. Bell wound up allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts in three innings while Troost surrendered three hits and three earned runs with two Ks in two innings.Â
CSUN jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Fleming picked up a two-out RBI with a single to plate Alexander. The Matador tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI ground out from Alexander. The rookie is tied for the team lead with 35 RBIs on the season.Â
CSUN and UC Riverside will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Matador Diamond. Before the game, the Matadors will honor 10 seniors playing in their final game at Matador Diamond: Bell, Katie Chenault, Fleming, Glover, Habitz, Hooper, Kliebenstein, Nate, Pofek and Jessica Rothanzl.Â
