CSUN Baseball (13-15) returns to the friendly confines of Matador Field to host Pepperdine in at least 11 innings of baseball on Tuesday afternoon. The Matadors and Waves will kick off the day by resuming a game that was suspended back on Feb. 21 in Pepperdine. The suspended game will resume in the top of the eighth inning and will start at 2 p.m. After the conclusion of the first game, CSUN and Pepperdine will face off once more in their regularly scheduled contest. Live video will be available on the CSUN Sports Network via Big West.TV with Ross Porter calling all the action.Â
Six weeks after beginning a non-conference game at Pepperdine, the Matadors and Waves will finally have an opportunity to conclude their non-conference game on Tuesday. In the game, the Waves scored six runs in the first inning to take a 6-1 lead after one inning. The Matadors battled back with eight runs over the final three frames to take a 12-7 lead after seven innings. Justin Toerner had four hits, scored three runs and drove in a run while Nick Sablock finished with two hits, two runs, three RBI and a home run. Riley Conlan also hit a home run and drove in two RBI and Kevin Riley scored twice and delivered two RBI. On the pitching side, five Matador pitchers appeared in the game including Matt Campbell, Joey Deceglie, Drake Atlee, Toerner and Kyle Nicol.Â
The suspended game will resume with Elias Orona at the plate to lead off the top of the eighth. Nicol is the Matadors' scheduled pitcher to return to the mound in the bottom half of the inning.Â
The Matadors kicked off Big West play last weekend at UC Davis and dropped two of three games. The Aggies pounded their way to an 8-2 win in the opener but the Matadors rebounded with a 4-2 comeback win in game two. CSUN held a 5-4 lead in the series finale entering the bottom of the eighth but UC Davis plated three runs in the frame and held on for a 7-5 win.Â
Riley had a strong series against the Aggies at the plate, delivering five hits along with a double, triple, home run and three RBI. Michael Russo helped the Matadors come-from-behind against the Aggies on Saturday with a game-tying RBI double in the top of the ninth. Receiving no-decisions in the series, Samuel Myers tossed 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while Andrew Weston hurled 7.0 innings and gave up three earned runs.Â
After a big weekend, Riley leads CSUN in batting (.305), hits (32), runs (21), doubles (10) and home runs (6) to go along with 22 RBI. Another power hitter, Albee Weiss has five home runs with 24 RBI, 12 runs, six doubles and two triples. Also providing offensive punch, Toerner is batting .270 with 15 runs, eight RBI and four doubles while Nolan Bumstead is hitting .269 with 14 RBI, eight runs, three doubles and two home runs.Â
Pepperdine leads the all-time series with CSUN, 43-41-2, after the teams split last season's two games. Each team won on each other's home field a season ago as CSUN won at Eddy D. Field Stadium 3-0 while Pepperdine earned a 3-1 victory at Matador Field. Dating back to 2001, the Matadors have won eight of the last 10 meetings with Pepperdine at home.Â
