San Diego scored two goals in a four-minute span in the second half to defeat CSUN 2-0.
SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of San Diego scored twice in a four-minute span in the second half to defeat CSUN 2-0 Thursday night.
An early CSUN run resulted in a Michael Flores shot that was saved by USD goalie Thomas Olsen. The deflection out-of-bounds resulted in a Matadors' corner which was successfully defended by the Toreros. CSUN earned a corner in the 12th minute that was turned away by San Diego. The first USD (4-3-1) shot of the match occurred in the 13th minute as Leon Mueller-Hisen's attempt went high.
A yellow card was issued to the Toreros' Ross Meludrum at 20:01, resulting in a CSUN offensive attack that was capped off by an Emmanuel Usen Jr. shot that went just high. Olsen withstood a Flores shot in the 31st minute, making a save to keep the score 0-0. USD recorded its first corner kick in the 37th minute. The ball was knocked out over the CSUN end line, which gave San Diego a second corner. The ball was knocked out again over the CSUN end line for a third consecutive corner kick. The Matadors quieted the Toreros' offense by heading the ball away.
Julio Rubio came off the bench for CSUN with five minutes remaining in the first half and immediately took a shot that was saved by Olsen. USD attacked late in the opening stanza, resulting in a Miguel Berry shot that was saved by Henrik Regitnig. There was no score heading into halftime.
Berry's header three minutes into the second was the first shot for either club. The Matadors sent away a 51st minute San Diego corner as the Toreros pressed. Daniel Trejo went wide with his attempt on the ensuing CSUN offensive attack.
USD took the lead in the 57th minute. A Berry header was saved in front by Regitnig. The ball came back out in front where Freddy Polzer was able to score off the rebound.
CSUN kicked off and sent the ball towards the San Diego goal. Trejo's attempt was blocked over the end line. The resulting Matador corner was sent out over the left sideline by the Toreros. CSUN regained possession a short time later. Andrew Rizeq's blast was saved by Olsen.
USD scored again in the 61st on Berry's fourth of the season. Berry headed in a Polzer cross that went past the outstretched arms of Regitnig. CSUN went on the offensive, resulting in a Rizeq blocked shot at 67:50. Less than a minute later, an Usen Jr. shot was also blocked, this time, the Matadors earned a corner out of it. The ball was sent towards the USD goal but was pushed away to the right.
The Toreros had three shots in a three-minute span with 15 to play. Two went wide with the third being saved by Vadim Sanzharevskyi who came on in relief with 22 minutes to play. After a Rubio shot was saved, two more USD shots came at Sanzharevskyi. He made a save on the first as the second went high. Sanzharevsky kept San Diego off the board with his third save in the 85th minute.
"We started off well," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "But we did not sustain the level of technical and tactical discipline to win a Division I game."
The Matadors (5-3) conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule Sunday night when CSUN travels to UCLA (2-3). The match will begin at 6 p.m.
