NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (2-1-4) suffered its first defeat of the 2017 season as Washington State (4-1-1) shutout the Matadors 3-0 on Friday evening at Lower Soccer Field. Senior goalkeeper Jenna Koziol came off the bench to total three saves in a CSUN career-high 73 minutes of action.
The Cougars controlled the pace for the most of the evening, outshooting CSUNÂ 16-1 including posting a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. CSUNÂ was whistled for 10 fouls in the match while the Cougars committed eight.Â
WSU scored two early goals in the first half and never looked back on Friday. After Jovani McCaskill collected a pair of saves in opening six minutes of play, the Cougars capitalized off a corner kick opportunity to score the game's first goal. With the ball sent into the Matadors' box, the defense deflected the ball out but Morgan Weaver gained possession and found the netting at the 5:50 mark.Â
Credited with an assist on the Weaver goal, Makamae Gomera-Stevens retrieved the ball inside the Matadors' box off an attempeted clear out. Gomera-Stevens cleaned up the play to give WSU a 2-0 lead 7:08 into the match.Â
The Matadors held the Cougars to three shots for the rest of the first half after the early barrage. Koziol, who entered the match in the 17th minute, made her first career save with the Matadors by stopping a shot from Shay Whieldon in the 25th minute.
After intermission, the Cougars added to their lead on their first shot of the half. Following a CSUN corner kick, the Cougars attacked the Matadors' net leading to a goal from Brianna Alger.Â
Koziol bounced back to make two more saves in the second half including a late shot from Maddy Haro in the 84th minute.Â
The Matadors nearly hit the net in the 73rd minute as Kirsten Von Meter found room on the break from the right side. Von Meter looked for the far post but goalkeeper Ella Doderick leaped and made a two-handed stop.Â
Defenders Amanda Martin and Lindsay Kutscher saw a full 90 minutes on the Matador backline in the contest. Freshman Amy Aquino made her first career start, playing 60 minutes.Â
Koziol's appearance on Friday was her third of her Matador career and first in net since seeing three minutes of action last season. Earlier this season, Koziol saw action as a field player against Houston.Â
CSUNÂ continues it stay in the Pacific Northwest with a Sunday morning match at Eastern Washington. Kick off is slated for 11:30 a.m.Â
