Cal Poly Fourth Quarter Run Sends Mustangs Past CSUN

A 14-4 Cal Poly run to start the fourth quarter powered the Mustangs past handed CSUN 84-71 in Big West women’s basketball play Saturday afternoon at the Mott Athletics Center.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—A 14-4 Cal Poly run to start the fourth quarter powered the Mustangs past handed CSUN 84-71 in Big West women's basketball play Saturday afternoon at the Mott Athletics Center.

Trailing 6-2 three minutes into the first quarter, Big West Player of the Week Dynn Leaupepe scored six of the next eight points for the Mustangs to earn Cal Poly the lead. Led by Fluker who scored the first eight points of the game for the Matadors, CSUN battled back to a 10-10 tie. Switching to full-court pressure, the Mustangs used an 8-1 spurt over the final two minutes of the first quarter to take a 21-14 lead.

Gabby Grupalo's field goal three minutes put Cal Poly (up 26-19. CSUN would hold the Mustangs off the scoreboard for the next 3+minutes as the Matadors scored seven consecutive points to tie the game. Ayzhiana Basallo made a three-pointer to break the drought and put Cal Poly back into the lead. Powered by five second quarter three-pointers, the Mustangs would take a 40-34 lead into halftime.

After going down by seven in the third quarter, the Matadors began to reign in the Mustangs. The Matadors got to within three, 53-50, on a Destiny Brooks' three-pointer with 3:18 to go in the third. A Channon Fluker layup on the ensuing CSUN possession reduced the advantage to 53-52 at the third quarter media timeout. Fluker was called for a foul that sent Nikki Fausley to the free throw line where she made 1-of-2 attempts.

Down 54-52, Eliza Matthews tied the game for the Matadors with a pair of free throws at 1:45. Brooks made a steal and went the distance for the first CSUN lead since the first quarter. The Matadors got a defensive stop which led to a Tessa Boagni layup and a 58-54 score in favor of the Mustangs. Dye Stahley score the first Mustangs' points in over two minutes with a pair of free throws. Brooks drew a foul on Stahley from beyond the three-point line. The freshman sank all three free throw attempts to put CSUN up 61-56. Emily Anderson responded with a three pointer that would make the score 61-59 after 30 minutes of play.

Cal Poly (8-7, 2-1 Big West) forced two turnovers on the first three CSUN fourth quarter possessions as the Mustangs would post the first six points of the fourth to regain the lead 65-61. A Fluker layup 3:09 into the final period got the Matadors on the board. Gabby Grupalo tallied four straight that would extend the advantage to 69-63. The Mustangs would go up 71-63 when Lynn Leaupep drove the lane for a basket. 73-63 came on Lynn Leaupep's free throws at the 4:45 mark.

Fluker broke through with a layup the next time down for the Matadors. Grupalo again hit the lane for a lauyup to again put Cal Poly up by double digits. CSUN would only make 2-of-9field goal attempts in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs ran away to the victory.
Dynn Leaupepe led the Mustangs with 20 points. Grupalo charted 18 while Devin Stanback had 12. Fluker led all scorers with 24 points. The 6-4 center extended her consecutive made free throw streak to 15 dating back to the Seattle game on Dec. 30 as she was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Boagni turned in her 10th career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. After recording only 11 points in six previous appearances this season for CSUN, Brooks ended the game with 10.

"I thought we got off to a slow start and fought back to get into the game," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "The same reason we dug ourselves into a hole was the same reason ended up losing the basketball game and that is our defense. Our defense hasn't been very good and we have to find a way to improve it. Ultimately, that's my responsibility and I haven't gotten it done. We have to go back to work this week and be a lot better on the defense end going into next week."
