CSUN Hosts Fullerton Thursday; UCR On ESPN 3 Saturday

A matchup on ESPN 3 highlights a pair of CSUN Women's Basketball Home Games This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN women's basketball team returns to the Matadome this week for a pair of games.
The Matadors (8-9, 1-2 Big West) take on Cal State Fullerton for the second time in 12 days when the Titans enter the Matadome for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday night. Any elementary/middle school aged Youth Basketball Team can attend the game for free. by emailing AthleticsMarketing@csun.edu. Every fan wearing CSUN RED attire gets into the game at $3 admission.

After dropping the conference opener 70-68 to CSUN Jan. 6, the Titans defeated Long Beach State 67-61 last Thursday before losing 63-50 to UC Riverside last Saturday night. Cal State Fullerton is 7-10 overall. Thursday's game will be streamed by the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health. Eric Kaback is scheduled to be on the call. The game will also be available on BigWest.tv.

Hannah Thompson (12.4) and Jade Vega (12.1) are ninth and 10th respectively in the Big West in scoring. Daeja Smith (9.2) is third in the conference in rebounding and is 12th in the Big West in scoring (11.6). CSUN defeated Cal State Fullerton for the 14th consecutive time on Jan. 6. Cal State Fullerton leads the all-time series 27-24.
The week concludes Saturday night when CSUN hosts UC Riverside. It is Dad & Daughters Day as it is free youth admission with a purchase of an adult ticket. Saturday's game is set for 7 p.m. and is going to be an ESPN 3 broadcast. Dave Caldwell will serve as the play-by-play announcer. Dave Miller will be the analyst while Courtney Sweet will serve as the sideline reporter.Â

The Highlanders improved to 2-2 in the Big West, 5-13 overall after defeating Cal State Fullerton 63-50 last Saturday night. UCR will host Hawai'i Thursday night before heading over to CSUN. Michelle Curry leads the team and is fourth in the Big West in scoring at a 15.2 points per game clip. Teammate Lauren Holt is eighth in the league in scoring at 12.9 ppg. Sklyer Lewis is the top rebounder at 7.6 per game, the fourth highest average in the league.

CSUN is playing UC Riverside for the 61st time with the Matadors leading the all-time series 31-29. CSUN swept the season series from the Highlanders last season. CSUN head coach Jason Flowers served as an assistant at UCR under head coach John Margaritis from 2008-10.Â

The Matadors dropped a pair of games last week. In a game that featured 12 ties and seven lead changes, UC Santa Barbara edged CSUN 74-73 last Thursday night. Coming off a career high 36-point game at Cal State Fullerton Jan. 6, Tessa Boagni scored a game high 25 points. She added seven rebounds and two blocks. Channon Fluker scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. She also blocked two shots. Hayley Tanabe scored six points, nabbed six rebounds, and dished out a game high seven assists against no turnovers.

Cal Poly defeated CSUN 84-71 last Saturday in San Luis Obispo. Fluker led all scorers with 24 points. The 6-4 center extended her consecutive made free throw streak to 15 dating back to the Seattle game on Dec. 30 as she was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Boagni turned in her 10th career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. After recording only 11 points in six previous appearances this season for CSUN, Destiny Brooks ended the game with 10.
