Personal Bests Highlight CSUN Track & Field Performances During Indoor Debut

Personal bests from several CSUN men's and women's track peformances highlighted on opening day of the indoor season.
Day 1 Results
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The CSUN track and field teams opened the 2018 indoor season by competing on opening day of the University of New Mexico Dr. Martin Luther King College Invitational.

"It was a great start to the 2018 indoor season," said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson. "We had an unprecedented number of personal bests and its only day one."

Men's Recap
Daniel Swarbrick earned second place in the weight throw with a toss of 58-10 3/4. Not only was it a personal best for Swarbrick, but it was the seventh best performance in the event by a CSUN thrower in school history.

In field of 74 in the 200m, Tjari Packard turned in a time of 21:91 to place 15th. His time missed the top-10 in school history by three-tenths of a second. Chazz Warren finished 24th in the event by running a time of 22.31. Both Matadors ran personal best times in the event.

Mark Nicolas came in 12th in the pole vault. He went 15-4 1/4 which is the ninth best in school history. Logan Cantrell was 18th in the pole vault (14-4 1/2).

The 600m saw Parker Caston (1:21.58) and Mario Ramirez (1:21.92) come in 14th and 15th respectively for the Matadors. Brendan Scott was 23rd in the event (1:24.21). All three times for the CSUN competitors were personal bests. Matthew Arnold went 22-2 1/4 to earn a 17th-place finish in the long jump for CSUN.

Women's Recap
Freshman De'Andreah Young recorded the top CSUN performance of the day as she recorded a time of 1:35.97 to finish third in the 600m. Fellow freshman Sonsoles Barba earned 12th in the 600m as she put up a time of 1:38.97.

"DeAndreah was impressive in her collegiate debut," Johnson said.

Sydney Berry recorded a leap of 17-9 in the long jump. Her performance placed her 24th in a field of 69 and was an indoor career best for the senior from Brentwood, Calif. Ty Wallace and Niema Poindexter tied for 52nd in the long jump as both registered a 16-1 3/4 performance. Sophomore Kayla Pickens' 200m time of :25.34 (74-of-102 in the race) was a personal best time.

"The student-athletes have been really working hard and have responded well to the new coaching staff," Johnson said. "We have a talented group of well accomplished coaches that complement the athletes very well."

The Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational concludes Saturday. The throwing events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the first running event getting underway at 9:15 a.m.
