Performances that saw CSUN men's and track and field competitors enter the all-time Matadors' indoor top-10 highlighted the final day of the University of New Mexico Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Performances that saw CSUN men's and track and field competitors enter the all-time Matadors' indoor top-10 highlighted the final day of the University of New Mexico Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
"I thought our teams competed well today," said CSUN interim head coach Lawrence Johnson.
Men's Recap
Michael Merchant ran the fourth fastest time in school history in the 800m (1:51.56) to place fifth in the race. The time is tops in the MPSF so far this season and is No. 18 overall in Division I.
Clint Myer threw the shot put 58-5 3/4, the seventh longest toss in school history to earn a seventh place showing. Dawaun Lucas registered an indoor personal best in the shot, 56-3 1/4, to place ninth.
Matthew Arnold finished fourth in the triple jump as he went 47-6 1/4. Ben Hibbert advanced to the finals of the 60m hurdles with a time of :8.23. The eighth seed, Hibbert, finished fifth in the finals by recording a time of 8.19.
Tjari Packard and Chazz Warren turned in impressive times during the prelims of the 60m dash. Packard was 10th in the field of 35 during the prelimis as he went :7.03. Packard recorded a personal best in the race with that time. Warren ran 7.19 for a 24th place showing. Only the top eight advanced to the finals. Santiago Gomez finished 13th in the 800m (2:01.57).
The 4x400m relay of Brenden Scott, Parker Caston, Packard, and Warren would come home in sixth place in a time of 3:20.96.
Women's Recap
Brandy Williams finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 48-11. Her mark was the ninth best in school history.
In the semifinals of the 60m hurdles, Courtney Robinson went down the track in a time of :8.50. Robinson's time was the third quickest in school history, but she barely missed advancing to the finals as Robinson placed 10th. Robinson also recorded a personal best in the 60m dash semis of :7.62.
Beth Rossi and Virginia Scardanzan both cleared 11-10 1/2 in the pole vault which is the eighth best mark in school history. Rossi would be credited with sixth while Scardanzan would be credited with 10th in the event. Gardenia Centanaro would clear 10-10 3/4 in the pole vault to be credited with a 13th place finish.
Katie Alveranga finished 10th in the 800m (2:22.94) while Jasmine Vasquez was 16th (2:24.46) in the event. Sydney Berry and Ty Wallace tallied the best performances in their respective flights of the triple jump for the Matadors. Berry's 38-4 3/4 would give her ninth place while Wallace would come in 12th in the event.
Freshman De'Andreah Young continued her strong start as she just missed advancing to the finals of the 60m hurdles. She posted a time of :8.92 which placed her 10th overall in the field of 47. Sonsoles Barba turned in a 12th place showing in the 600m as she recorded a time of 1:38.97.
Sydney Mosley turned in personal best times in both the 60m dash (:7.78) and the 60m hurdles (:8.61) during the preliminaries of both events. Leah Lambert also had a personal best in the 400 (1:01.07).
In the 4x400m relay, the quartet of Young, Barba, Vasquez, and Alvarnega finished eighth with a time of 3:55.13.
"The coaching staff has raised the standard of excellence for our programs and the student-athletes are working hard to meet those standards," Johnson said. "We have a lot more work to do, but we are enthusiastic about the future."
The Matadors return to the track next weekend at the University of Washington Husky Invitational. Action is set for both Friday and Saturday in Seattle.
