SOMIS, Calif. - Senior Felix Mory posted his third top-10 finish of the 2017-18 season Tuesday, finishing in a tie for fourth at the Waves Challenge held at Saticoy Country Club.
As a team, CSUN easily had its best round of the tournament Tuesday as Monday's strong winds subsided this afternoon. The Matadors were 12th after an opening round 325 before slipping to 14th following a 337 in round two.
CSUN bounced back with a final 308 on Tuesday to move up to 13th at 970. Host Pepperdine won both the team and individual title as the Waves finished at 877 as a team and Sahith Theegala was the only player in the field to finish under par at 11-under 205.
"Obviously it's a disappointing way to start the second half of the season," said head coach Jim Bracken. "The conditions the first day were really tough but the scores today were better so we can't make excuses. If anything it was poor execution that cost us today."
Mory, who opened with rounds of 75-78, fired a two-under round of 70 on Tuesday to move up five spots into the top five at the conclusion. The CSUNÂ senior was two-over after bogeys at four and five before birdies on four of his next six holes moved him to two-under where he stayed the remainder of the round.
"Felix could have easily shot 68 today, he hit the ball really well but his putter let him down," added Bracken.Â
Trym Falch tied for 57th at 30-over 246 after his third consecutive round of 82. Falch was five-over through nine holes on Tuesday but a bogey and a double bogey down the stretch dropped him to 10-over for the round.
Gabriel Barnes had his best round of the tournament Tuesday, carding a seven-over 79 to finish 66th at 34-over 250. Luis Calderon had the Matadors' second lowest round of the day Tuesday with a final round 77 which moved him into a tie for 70th at 36-over 252. Jason McGuinness rounded out the CSUNÂ scoring, finishing 73rd at 45-over 261.
CSUNÂ next travels to Hawai'i for the John A. Burns Invitational which takes place Feb. 15-17.
