CSUN Gets Women's Tennis Season Underway In Hawai'i

CSUN opened the Spring portion of the 2017-18 scheduled Thursday by participating in day 1 of the University of Hawai’i Weinman Foundation Invitational.

HONOLULU—CSUN opened the Spring portion of the 2017-18 scheduled Thursday by participating in day 1 of the University of Hawai'i Weinman Foundation Invitational.

In singles play, Mari Taslagyan earned the lone CSUN victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Hawai'i's Taylor Lau. Alicia Dinlemeyer lost 6-2, 6-1 to Hawai'i's Michelle Pitts. Two additional singles' matches saw players from Hawai'i and the Matadors face off. Kiryang Kim dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Nikola Dolakova while Arpe Bagumyan fell to Alzbeta Houbova 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

The remaining four CSUN singles' matches featured matchups between players from Washington State and the Matadors. Michaela Bayerlova defeated Elisa Elhadj in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Barbora Michaelkova handed Skyla Alcon a 6-3, 6-2 defeat. Ege Tomey defeated Elisaveta Nosenko 6-2, 6-2. Guzal Yusuprova edged Monika Van de Vondel 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, Kim and Taslagyan were victorious, 6-4, over Hawai'i's Marina Hruba and Pitts. Scott Shutter and Emma Roenholt lost 6-1 to Lau and Houbova. Alcon and Van de Vondel were defeated by Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma of Hawai'i 6-4. Washington State's Misovska and Tiffany Mylonas defeated Elhadj and Dinklemeyer 6-3. Nosenko and Bagumyan lost 6-4 to Michaelkova and Melissa Ates of Washington State 6-4.

"It was good to get matches for everyone, particularly for Scout who hasn't played since Oct. 2016 and Elisa who hasn't played singles since last April," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Mari had a good start. Monika, Skyla, Ki, and Arpe had close matches. Our doubles were solid throughout. We are looking forward to continued growth in confidence for the team in the next two days."

The tournament continues Friday with play scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
