COACH JEFF STORKÂ SAID
"I think what's happening is we're putting ourselves in position to win sets and win matches but we just need to mentally tougher down the stretch. We need to learn how to stay within ourselves and stay in the moment. I think we're playing decent volleyball right now but we need to be able to finish sets and finish matches."Â
SET 1
The two teams stayed even until the visitors used a 3-0 run to snap a 7-7 tie. Cal Poly still led by three at 12-9 when the Matadors answered with four straight points to take a 13-12 lead following a Johnson-Nicole Nevarez block. A Nevarez kill boosted the lead to three (16-13) and CSUN would ultimately lead by five (19-14) after a Morgan Salone kill. A 4-0 Cal Poly run cut the lead to one before a Nada Dragovic kill kept the Matador lead at two.
A Mustang service error maintained a 22-20 CSUN lead when Cal Poly put together a 4-1 run to earn its first set point at 24-23. The Matadors saved a pair of set points (24-23, 25-24) when Kristey Markle served an ace giving CSUN set point at 26-25. But consecutive Matador hitting errors gave the visitors their third set point at 27-26. McLeod saved one final set point before a CSUN service error and a Van Winden kill gave Cal Poly the 29-27 win. Â
