FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Tomas Helgo posted the best finish of his young Matador career Tuesday, finishing 12th while the CSUN Matadors took seventh as a team at the Nick Watney Invitational at Dragonfly Golf Club.
"Looking at the scores today, we had one of the higher rounds, but it was still a respectable finish," said CSUN Head Coach Jim Bracken. "We improved from a week ago, we just have to continue to eliminate mistakes and look forward to our home event in two weeks."
Helgo, who tied for 81st in his CSUN debut in Colorado a week ago, had four birdies on his way to one-under front nine. He then finished one-over on the back nine to complete the day at even par 72. Helgo closed the tournament with rounds of 71-69-72 and tied for 12th at four-under 212.
Fellow freshman Paul-Louis Gachet, who opened the final round tied for 15th, posted a two-over 74 on Tuesday to narrowly miss his first collegiate top-20 finish. With a three-round score of one-over 217 (70-73-74), Gachet tied for 25th at one-over 217.Â
Senior Tomas Skajem also posted his best finish of the young season, tying for 37th at four-over 220 (75-71-74). Michael Zhang tied for 42nd at six-over 222 (78-71-73) and Ryan Hoffenberg, competing as an individual, tied for 61st at 13-over 229 (74-77-78).Â
Gabriel Barnes rounded out the Matador team scoring, finishing 67th at 20-over 236 (83-76-77).
The Matadors are back in action Oct. 15 as CSUN hosts the annual Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
