10/31/2018 10:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Davis, the No. 5 seed, defeated CSUN, the No. 4 seed, 3-2 in the first round of the Big West Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Wednesday night at Matador Field.
Â
CSUN (9-8-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Michael Flores scored in the 16th minute. Johnny Rodriguez sent a touch pass to Daniel Trejo who in turn sent a quick touch pass of his own to Flores for his second goal of the season.
Â
UC Davis (11-4-3) tied the match in the 31st. A Jacob Rudolph throw-in bounced to Jake Haupt who was able to send the ball towards the net. Kaleb Schirmacher jumped in the air and headed the ball in for his second of the year. The Aggies would take a 2-1 lead at the 73:44 mark on a Matador own goal. CSUN attempted to clear a ball out of the goalkeeper area but would end up sending the ball into their own net.
Â
UC Davis responded in the 74th when Justin Wright took a long ball from Rudolph and sent in low from right to left past Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Henrik Regitnig. Down two, CSUN got one back five minutes later when Samuel Dadzie sent a long ball towards the UCD net. Rodriguez took the ball out of the air, and with two dribbles, his attempt went low from right to left past Wallis Lapsley.
Â
The Matadors continued to charge. CSUN appeared to have tied the match with 4:20 remaining when Trejo put the ball past Lapsley. However, the Matadors were whistled for their eighth offsides of the match, negating the tally. The final CSUN offensive chance came with 54 seconds to when the Matadors were awarded a corner kick. CSUN attempted to create a chance in front, but UC Davis was able to defend successfully. The Aggies passed the ball down field where UCD was able to dribble out the clock.
Â
UC Davis advances to the semifinals where the Aggies will face the No. 1 seed, UC Irvine (11-5-2), on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
Â
UC Davis Head Coach Dwayne Schaffer
Opening Statement
"I thought it was an exciting game. I'm extremely excited and happy for my team and my program. I always give credit to my opponent. Terry has a great program and team. To come to Northridge and win a game is extremely difficult, but my team did it today."
Â
On the match
"We scored three goals away. I thought we played extremely well in the first half. I thought we kept the game where we wanted. We came out in the second half with great energy and effort. We scored two goals to make it difficult on Northridge and that's exactly what happened."
Â
"We scored a nice goal to get back into the game in the first half. In the second half, I told the guys to keep playing with greater energy and effort than them. We had one go our way in the second half. We could have had two or three more. (CSUN) had some great chances. Overall it was a great game. Terry has a great team and so do I. It was a great game between two quality teams in the Big West and it was great for our conference."
Â
CSUN Head Coach Terry Davila
Opening Statement
"Tonight, was a tough loss. We started our season off tough and it's been a long season. We've had to deal with a lot of things on and off the field."
Â
On the match
"I thought we could have done a better job of transition defense off of UC Davis' set pieces. That hurt us tonight, especially on the third goal."
Â
I thought we responded well after going down two goals and I thought we tied it up since the ball was in the net, but it was a tight call (on the offsides) that didn't go our way."
