NORTHRIDGE, Calif - The CSUN women's tennis team continued the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule when they traveled to Long Beach for the LBSU Fall Invitational Oct. 5-7.
"We are a pretty young team with four freshmen and they will have their occasional growing pains," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "However, they have displayed a ton of energy, work ethic and talent. The team enjoys being with each other and competing for each other."
For the doubles section of the tournament, the CSUN teams performed well after suffering opening round losses. The doubles team of Skyla Alcon and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso opened the tournament by losing to Aneta Miksovska and Yang Lee of Washington State University, 6-3. However, that would be their only doubles loss, as they won their next matches against Portland State's Eszter Zador, and Nina Nikitovic, 6-0, and their semifinal match against Casey Lee Emery and Eira Tobrand from Cal State Fullerton, 6-4.
The doubles team of Monika Van de Vondel and Joleen Coetzee also avenged their opening round loss to Siobhan Anderson and Yesica DeLucas of Loyola Marymount, 6-4 by making it all the way to the consolation final to face Alcon/Toboso. Van de Vondel/Coetzee took care of business by defeating Grand Canyon University's teams of Celia Morel and Emilia Occhipinti in the second round 6-3, and Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo in the third round, 7-5. The CSUN teams met in the finals but did not play to avoid playing the same team.
"Our doubles' teams are starting to gel," said Victor. "With each team having a freshman, there is a feeling out period, but Jolene is now more comfortable taking chances than last week and she and Monika are communicating and playing well. Ana and Skyla also compliment each other beautifully."
In the singles' portion of the tournament. The Matadors saw impressive performances from Alcon, Van de Vondel and Sibel Demirbaga.
Alcon overcame her opening round loss to Tiffany Mylonas (5-7,6-2,6-3) by winning her next two matches to advance to the consolation finals. She got there by defeating Zador (6-1, 6-3) and Jacinta Milenkoski (6-4, 6-3) of PSU.
Van de Vondel was the lone CSUN player to reach the final four of the winners bracket of the Singles Flight A. She defeated Lotti Meszaros of PSU (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) and Lee Emery of CSUF, (6-4, 6-0) to reach the semi-finals before eventually losing to Anderson of LMU (6-0, 6-3). "Monika had two excellent singles wins and her confidence grew quite a bit." Victor said.
Demirbaga also had great singles play after her opening round loss. She went on to win the consolation bracket in Singles Flight C. She defeated Taylor Rees of PSU, (6-2, 6-2) and swept Taylor Valenzuela of CSUF (6-0, 6-0) to advance to the consolation finals. She would take the crown by overcoming Ege Tomey of WSU (6-1, 6-2) in a no-doubt impressive performance by the freshman. "Sibel played outstanding and relaxed tennis," said Victor. "She is a lot of fun to watch. She has high energy and a maturity that is well beyond her years."
The next tournament for the Matadors is the ITA Southwest Regionals from San Diego, CA, on Oct. 18-21.
