DES MOINES, Iowa—Drake, ranked number one in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, defeated CSUN 73-63 in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Knapp Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN opened the game on a 7-0 run. The Bulldogs responded with a 21-5 scoring spree over the final 7:25 of the stanza that would result in Drake leading 25-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs made 10-of-16 field goal attempts in the first including 4-of-6 from three-point range.
- The Matadors began the second quarter by scoring 12 of the first 16 points, allowing CSUN to cut the Drake lead to 31-27 at the media timeout midway through the frame. The Bulldogs would end up holding the Matadors to two points over the final 5:36 of the first half to take a 36-29 lead into halftime. Â
- Drake began the third quarter with a 12-4 run that earn the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game to that point, 48-33. With 5:58 to go in the third quarter, CSUN scored five straight to cut the advantage to 10. The Bulldogs clawed to a 12-7 gain for the remainder the quarter to take a 60-45 lead after 30 minutes.
- An 9-2 CSUN run to begin the fourth was capped off by a Destiny Brooks' three-pointer. Drake called timeout with 6:55 to play, leading 62-54. The Bulldogs' lead remained at eight for nearly two minutes before a Sammie Bachrodt offensive rebound and put back returned the Drake lead into double digits.
- Five in a row for CSUN cut the Bulldogs lead in half with 4:00 to go. Sarah Rhine scored for Drake to create a 66-59 score the next time down for Drake. Destiny Brooks responded with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. Maddy Dean connected on a three on the following Drake possession. Down by seven, Hayley Tanabe was fouled on a drive. She went to the free throw line with 1:50 to go. Tanabe missed the first, but made the second.
- Up 69-63, Drake drew a CSUN foul, and with the possession, Rhine made a layup with 1:20 to go. The Matadors called timeout. Despite having three chances, CSUN couldn't come away with a point, but the Matadors forced a Drake turnover. CSUN missed a three-point field goal attempt and were forced to foul, their fourth of the quarter. Drake inbounded the ball and were fouled again. Maddie Monahan made both of her free throws for a 73-63 score at the 31-second mark. CSUN missed its final attempt of the game for the final 10-point margin of victory for the Bulldogs.Â
- Nine of the 10 CSUN players who saw action scored at least two points.
- Destiny Brooks led CSUN in scoring with 15 points. All five her made field goals were three-pointers.
- Channon Fluker recorded her 58th career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The 6-4 center only played 18 minutes due to foul trouble.
- Eliza Matthews returned from a 2017-18 injury and played for the first time against the Bulldogs. She scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes of work. De'Jionae Calloway was 3-of-4 off the bench with three rebounds to help offset Fluker's foul trouble.
- CSUN forced 13 Drake turnovers which were turned into 13 points.
- The Bulldogs shot 45% (27-of-60) compared to 34.3% (24-of-70) for the game. Drake would outrebound CSUN 43-39.
- Sara Rhine, the current Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, was the top Drake scorer with 24 points. Â Rhine went 10-of-20 from the floor and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
- Maddy Dean posted 17 for the Bulldogs. She was 5-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.
- "I thought this was our best outing so far to this point of the season. We started off well, they made a run which got the crowd into it. I thought we responded really well to the environment and the circumstances and a little bit of adversity. I'm pleased with our progress, but we are not where we want to be. Different players did different things. Having Eliza back and with her energy as well as De'Jionae's effort was really good. If we continue to improve each time out, we will be please where end up at the end of the year. Â Â
- CSUN hosts the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 23-24. The Matadors will face Washington State (2-2) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Harvard and Jacksonville State will play in the other semifinal on Friday at 5 p.m. Saturday's play begins at 3:30 p.m.Â
