Harvard Defeats CSUN In Championship Game

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Harvard shot 54.7% from the field as the Crimson defeated CSUN 75-55 in the championship game of the 2018 Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Basketball Classic Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard made 14 of its first 20 field goal attempts in the game (including its first four three-point attempts), taking a 19-point lead with 7:06 to play in the first half. On the other hand, the Matadors missed 15 of its first 17 from the field.Â
- CSUN chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 36-26 at halftime when De'Jionae Calloway sank a three-pointer at the buzzer. Calloway scored 13 points in the first 20 minutes while Jadyn Bush and Katie Benzan each had 11 for the Crimson.Â
- Harvard opened the second half on a 10-1 spurt as CSUN went cold again, missing their first nine field goal attempts of the third. The Matadors would only make two field goal attempts in 12 tries as CSUN was outscored 21-12 in the third and trailed 57-38 after 30 minutes.Â
- Back-to-back fast break three-pointers from CSUN's Claudia Ramos cut the Harvard advantage to 61-46 and forced the Crimson to take a timeout with 6:44 to play in the fourth quarter. The Matadors would get as close as 14 down the stretch as Harvard limited CSUN to six field goals in the final frame to win by 20.
FOR CSUN
- Calloway ended the game with a game high 19 points. She made seven of 14 field goal attempts and grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Calloway would be named to the All-Tournament team as the 6-0 forward 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds during the tournament.
FOR HARVARD
- Harvard was 29-of-53 from the field for the game. The Crimson were 12-of-27 (44.4%) from three-point range.
- Tournament MVP Jadyn Bush recorded a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds. Bush averaged 17.5 points and 12.0 rebounds for the tournament.
- Katie Benzan joined Bush on the All-Tournament team as she scored 17 against the Matadors. She averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in two tournament games.
- The Crimson held the Matadors to 17-of-67 from the floor for the game (25.4%). CSUN would make four of its six three-point attempts (6-of-23, 26.1%) in the fourth quarter.

- "Hats off to Harvard. Their kids played well and were extremely disciplined. We weren't very good defensively and we missed a lot of open shots. De'Jionae put together another great game. She played with a lot of energy."Â
THIRD-PLACE GAME
- Washington State defeated Jacksonville State 64-51 in the third-place game. Borislava Hristova scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Cougars.
