Matadors Fall at New Mexico State
12/19/2018 8:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LAS CRUCES, N.M.---Freshman Lamine Diane posted his fifth double-double of the season but CSUN Men's Basketball (3-8) fell at New Mexico State, 92-57, on Wednesday evening at the Pan American Center. Diane finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore Terrell Gomez added 16 points. The Matadors trailed by 10 points late in the first half, but the Aggies ended the period in strong fashion and never looked back to hand CSUN its second-straight loss in the Las Vegas Classic.
"We got beat in probably every phase of the game," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "First of all, they are really good. That's a really good basketball team and they are much farther ahead of us right now. We had some breakdowns defensively where we didn't do things correctly and they made us pay almost every time, whether it was a three or an offensive rebound. This is one of those games where we need to learn from it, and at the same time put it behind us real quick. We're heading to Vegas hopefully with a chance to win two."
CSUN shot 42.9 percent from the field while the Aggies shot 49.3 percent for the night. NMSU would knock down 15 3-pointers on 37 attempts (40.5) compared to the Matadors who went 5-for-22 from beyond the arc (22.7 percent). The Aggies also out-rebounded the Matadors 40-25.
Â
The Matadors stayed with the Aggies in the opening minutes of the period as Diane brought CSUN within 7-6 on a jumper. From there, the Matadors went without a field goal for over five minutes. NNSU took advantage and went on a 13-2 run to build a 20-8 lead. Keyon Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the stretch to push the lead to double-digits.
Â
CSUN scored five-straight points capped off by a Michael Ou dunk to trim the deficit to 22-13 with 7:14 left to go in the first half. Diane scored a team-high 12 points in the first half including his first 3-pointer of the season at the 4:23 mark. The Aggies though closed the half strong with a 16-6 spurt that extended their lead to 47-26. Mohamed Thiam beat the halftime buzzer with a trey from straight away.
The Matadors would trim the lead to 17 on baskets from Diane and Ou but the Aggies responded with a 13-0 run to push the lead to 60-30. The Matadors would continue to battle as Diane tallied 13 points in the period and Gomez went 4-for-8 with 11 points. Unfortunately for the Matadors, they were unable to make up the gap as the Aggies outscored CSUN 45-31 in the period to win by a 35-point margin.
Diane went 10-of-16 from the field and collected two blocked shots. Matador reserves Rodney Henderson Jr. and Ou chipped in with five points apiece.
For the Aggies, Jones came off the bench and went 7-for-11 from 3-point range to finish with 21 points. As a group, the Aggies' bench posted 73 points in the game.
CSUN heads to Las Vegas to complete in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic this weekend. The Matadors face SIUE on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., and a day later they will either take on Northern Colorado or Rider in a championship or consolation game. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
