THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: California 67, CSUN 42
LOCATION: Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, Calif.
RECORDS: California 7-0, CSUN 4-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN led 10-9 at the first quarter media timeout behind a pair of three-pointers from freshman Jordyn Jackson. Trailing 12-9, the Bears scored the next six before a Channon Fluker layup broke the drought. Cal would end up leading 20-19 at the end of one.
- California All-American Kristine Anigwe scored the first 12 points for the Bears, reaching the 2,000-career point plateau. Anigwe had 14 of the 20 for California in the first quarter.
- A 7-0 run to start the second for the Bears put Cal into the lead 27-19. After shooting 50% in the opening 10 minutes, CSUN missed its first nine field goal attempts of the second. The Matadors would not get on the board until the 4:57 mark when Juilana Louis put back a De'Jionae Calloway miss.
- CSUN continued to chip away at the Bears' advantage. A Claudia Ramos' three-pointer with 58.4 seconds remaining in the first half pulled the Matadors to within three, 31-28 at halftime. Despite its own shooting woes, the Matadors held Cal to 4-of-16 from the field in the second quarter.
- California scored the first 10 points of the third quarter. The Bears went 5-of-7 from the floor during the 4:30 stretch. The Bears would outscore the Matadors 19-6 in the third quarter. The lone CSUN points would come on a De'Jionae Calloway three-point play that would occur at the 1:01 mark and a Channon Fluker three-pointer at the third quarter buzzer.
- Calloway led the Matadors with 13 points. Calloway made six of 10 field goal attempts.
- Jackson charted 10 points and three assists.
- Louis, a sophomore, grabbed a career high 13 rebounds. She added six points and two steals.
- Fluker scored seven to bring herself to within 12 of the CSUN school record for career points which is held by Matadors' assistant coach Ashlee Guay (1,761).
- This was the 29th time CSUN has played a nationally ranked opponent since moving to the Division I level in time for the 1990-91 season.
- Despite foul trouble, Anigwe led all scorers with 26 points. She was 12-of-17 from the field. She added a team high 10 rebounds.
- Kianna Smith scored 14 for the Bears.
- California limited CSUN to 6-for-28 shooting in the second half. On the other end, the Bears were 16-of-30 from the field in closing frame.
- "I thought it was a tale of two halves. I thought we were willing to do the things in the first half that it takes to be in game with a team such as Cal. I thought we were willing to make multiple efforts on defense, we rebounded outside of our area. We moved the ball on offense and got out and ran which put pressure on them."
- "We weren't willing to keep up that intensity In the second half. You can't play a half a game against a really good team like them. So, hats off to them. They did the things they were supposed to do for the entire game and came away with the win."
