Matadors Tie School Run Record in 31-5 Rout of Manhattan
2/24/2018 8:51:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (3-3) tied a school record for runs in a game as it pounded out 25 hits, 13 extra base hits and six home runs in a 31-5 victory over Manhattan on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. A total of 15 different Matadors recorded at least one hit and six had multi-hit efforts. Nick Sablock drove in a career-high six runs to go with four hits, four runs scored and a home run while Joey Cooper went 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored. Brandon Bohning also had three hits, four RBI and three runs scored to go with his second home run of the series. Trevor Casanova also hit a home run while Ben Martz, RIley Conlan and Alex Hull each hit their respective first home runs of the season.Â
The team matched the run record established by the 1997 team in a 31-9 victory at UC Santa Barbara. CSUN also set a new RBI record for a single game with 31 on the afternoon.Â
"I thought we were on time all day, that was the key," said head coach Greg Moore. "Guys were getting their swings off, more importantly they weren't guessing, they weren't trying to get tricky with their hands. They just swung the bats. To see an offense consistently on time, one through nine, that's a good sign.Â
"It's over, those two games are done," added Moore about the team's two wins in the series. "I don't think anything is clicking right now because we're cleaning up the field. We just have to go back to work, it's as simple as that. It's great to put it on the stat sheet. But that stat sheet doesn't get you future hits, and do the future work. They put a target on their back by swinging well today, and they tilted the pinball machine so now everything is inflated. They'll get pitched tough, and these hitters better need to get back to work because we have work to do."
The Matadors struck first in the bottom of the first as Casanova deposited a two-run home run. The Jaspers would answer back with two of their own in the second after a two-out, two-run single from Will Trochiano.
From there, it would be all CSUN. The Matadors surged back in front with a four-run second. Nolan Bumstead put the Matadors ahead with an RBI single, and Joey Cooper stroked a two-out, two-run triple down the right field line. Casanova drove in another run on a single to right field.Â
The Matadors added another four runs in the third, capped off by a two-run home run from Bohning. Another four runs would come across an inning later to stretch the lead to 14-3. The Jaspers' Ryan Takacs hit three consecutive batters in the fourth, forcing in a run, and Sablock brought in another on an RBI hit. Cooper added to his RBI total with a two-run double that plated Bumstead and Justin Toerner.Â
After being shutout in the fifth, the Matadors went back on the scoring attack in the sixth, this time scoring six times. Cooper had another RBI hit in the frame while Martz hit his first career home run, a three-run shot, to stretch the lead to 15. Conlan came off the bench and made it back-to-back home runs with a solo blast.Â
CSUN recorded its third four-run inning in the seventh. Hull joined the home run parade with a two-run blast to left field, and Sablock stroked another two-run home run to right center.Â
The team capped off the impressive hitting display with its biggest inning yet, a seven-run eighth inning to extend to a 31-5 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Barret singled in a run, and Sablock followed with a walk. Bohning would double in two more runs in the frame. After Wesley Ghan-Gibson registered a two-run double, Joey Czarske finished the scoring with an RBI single.Â
CSUNÂ scored multiple times in seven of eight innings on Saturday. Only three batters on the day were unsuccessful in picking up a hit but all 18 batters reached base at least once. In addition, 17 of the 18 batters in the ballgame scored at least one run.
Â
On the pitching side, Matt Acosta earned his first career victory as he tossed a shutout inning in relief. Cayce Rocco, Hayden Shenefield and Isaiah Nunez also threw scoreless innings on the afternoon.Â
The Matadors go for the sweep of Manhattan on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
