CSUN Hosts Cal Poly In Big West Tennis Opener Sunday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN hits the Matador Tennis Courts this weekend for the first time when CSUN hosts Cal Poly in the Big West dual opener for both squads.

The Mustangs are 2-1 after winning a pair of duals last weekend at home. Junior Caroline Williams was named Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors with a 4-0 record in singles and doubles in two home victories. Williams helped the Mustangs defeat Nevada (4-3) and San Francisco (5-2). Playing at No. 4 singles, she downed the Wolf Pack's Blaga Delic (6-2, 6-2) and Shanna Dos Santos of the Dons (6-2, 6-4). At No. 3 doubles, Williams, a Maryland transfer, and Grace Olyphant won twice, including a 7-6 (5) triumph against Nevada's Lili Fekete and Maria Tatarnikova.
CSUN has won five in a row in the all-time dual series to even the all-time record to 15-15 between the two schools.

San José State defeated CSUN 4-0 in the women's tennis dual opener for the Matadors Saturday afternoon. The dual began with doubles competition. At No. 1, Sybille Gauvain and Miyo Kobayahsi defeated Monika Van de Vondel and Alicia Dinkelmeyer 6-3. No. 2 saw Kirayng Kim and Mari Taslagyan defeat Tamara Cuilbrk and Laura Malsert 6-4. Doubles wrapped up with Jackie Wagner and Savannah Sendar defeat Skyla Alcon and Arpe Bagumyan 7-5.

The first singles match to conclude was at No. 5 as Malsert defeated Bagumyan 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 singles finished next. Cuilbrk handed Alcon a 7-5, 6-2 defeated to make it 3-1. The dual concluded at No. 6 singles when Sendar defeated Scout Shutter 6-1, 6-3. Van de Vondel was ahead at No. 1 singles, 6-4 when the dual was halted.

Santa Clara defeated CSUN 4-1 in a women's tennis dual Sunday afternoon. The Matadors took the doubles point. The CSUN No. 2 pair of Kim and Taslagyan defeated Madison Clarke and El Tawil Zeina 6-3. At No. 3, Alcon and Bagumyan earned a 6-3 decision over Elvena Gevargiz.

The Broncos (1-2) got on the board at No. 5 singles when Gevargiz defeated Bagumyan 6-1, 6-0. Santa Clara took the lead at No. 2 singles as Maddie Pothoff defeated Kim 6-0, 6-3. Nadine Del Carmen put SCU up 3-1 as she posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles against Shutter. The Broncos clinched the dual at No. 1 singles. Clarke dropped the opening set to Van de Vondel 6-4 before tying the match 6-0 in set two. Clarke charted the victory 6-1 in the third and deciding set. Taslagyan was up a set at No. 4 singles against Katya Tabachnik before the dual was secured by Santa Clara.
