On Wednesday, the Matadors dropped their fourth-straight game on their spring break road trip as CSUN fell to No. 24 Illinois 12-7. The Matadors pounded out 11 hits in the game including notching home runs from Albee Weiss and Joey Cooper but the Illini countered with 13 hits as well as eight RBI rom Bren Spillane. Off the bench, Michael Russo went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Weiss tallied his 11th home run of the season, tying his previous career high he set last season. Jayson Newman took the loss by tossing an inning in relief, allowing three runs.Â
Weiss continues to move up the Matadors' career home run list after his homer on Wednesday. The senior now has 33 home runs, which puts him in a three-way tie for seventh place in CSUN history with Mike Solar (1989-92) and Tim Arroyo (1999-02). Weiss' next home run would move him up to sixth place on the list, which is currently occupied by Denny Vigo (1989-92).Â
In the national rankings, Weiss is in a three-way tie with NC State's Brett Kinneman and California's Andrew Vaughn for the most of home runs in all of Division I baseball. Weiss is also fourth in the nation in RBI (31) and eighth in total bases (63). As a team, the Matadors are fifth in the nation in home runs (36) and sixth in slugging percentage (.534).Â
