SPRINGFIELD, Mo.---CSUN Baseball was shut out for the first time this season as Missouri State prevailed 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field. The Matador bullpen combined to work seven innings in the ballgame led by Cassius Hamm who went 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run. Nolan Bumstead extended his on-base streak to 10-straight games with a single in the fourth inning.Â
Despite only chalking up just four hits in the game, the Matadors had base runners aboard in seven of the nine innings on Saturday but each time the Bears would have an answer. In all, the Matadors left nine runners on base including three in scoring position.Â
The Bears' starter Ty Buckner frustrated the Matadors throughout his 5.2 innings of work. Buckner induced an inning-ending 4-3 double play in the first inning, and stranded a base runner in the second inning. In the third, the Matadors threatened with runners at first and second base with two outs but Buckner retired Albee Weiss on a line out to center field.Â
CSUN was turned away again in the fourth after a leadoff single from Bumstead, and in the fifth following a two-out walk by Joey Cooper. Buckner ran into trouble in the sixth after Michael Russo and Alex Hull drew two-out walks, however reliever Jake Fromson sat down Kyle Barret on a liner to short. On the day, Buckner tossed struck out five batters while allowing three hits.Â
In the bottom of the first, Drew Millas stroked a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Bears ahead 2-0. Missouri State added to its lead an inning later after Hunter Steinmetz brought home a run on a fielder's choice.
Hamm entered the game in the bottom of the second inning and did his best to cool off the Bears' bats. After giving up a run in the second, Hamm kept Missouri State off the scoreboard for the next three innings including retiring nine-straight batters at one point.Â
In the sixth, Missouri State took advantage of a Matador error in right field to plate its fourth run of the afternoon. Cayce Rocco came out of the bullpen to strike out Jack Duffy to strand a runner at second base.Â
The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI double from Steinmetz. Rocco rallied to prevent any further damage as he struck out two batters and retired Ben Whetstone on a groundout to leave the bases loaded.Â
CSUN would have one more scoring chance in the top of the ninth as Barret singled and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Brandon Bohning followed with a two-out walk but Alvaro Rubalcaba grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game. Fromson earned the save, tossing 3.1 shutout innings.Â
The Matadors look to avoid a Missouri State weekend sweep on Sunday morning. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. (PST).Â
