NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The 12th-ranked CSUN Matadors snapped a three-match skid by sweeping visiting George Mason 25-23, 25-18, 25-19Â Friday night in The Matadome.
By picking up the non-conference win, the Matadors improve to 9-7 while the Patriots drop to 10-8.
Arvis Greene and Dimitar Kalchev combined for 30 of CSUN's 45 kills as the Matadors hit .429 as a team, its highest hitting percentage since hitting .481 against UC Santa Cruz on Feb. 3. Kalchev had 16 kills (.345) while Greene added 14 kills, hitting .500 on 29 attacks.
Eric Chance and Josiah Byers each added five kills as each middle hit at least .625 in the win as Sam Porter handed out 36 assists.
"I'm happy that we fought and were able to put together a complete match," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "George Mason is a good team that is well coached. We were able to sideout better than we have in recent matches which helped us get an important win."
The visiting Patriots led by as many as three in the opening set, holding an 18-15 lead following a Christian Malias kill. But an ensuing 6-0 Matador run quickly erased the lead and put CSUN in front 21-18. George Mason battled back to knot the score at 22, when kills from Chance and Greene set the Matadors up with set point at 24-22. After the Patriots saved one set point, Greene's set-ending kill.
The final set was tight throughout until CSUN used a 4-0 run to open up a 16-12 lead. Kalchev's ace made it 20-15 Matadors and CSUN took the 3-0 set closing the set 25-19.
CSUNÂ concludes the non-conference portion of the 2018 schedule Saturday night, hosting Harvard at 7 p.m.
