Six-Run Fifth the Difference in CSUN's Loss to Long Beach State
4/13/2018 9:48:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Defensive miscues proved costly for CSUN Baseball (16-17, 4-3 BWC) on Friday afternoon as the Matadors fell to Long Beach State 7-5 in a Big West Conference game at Matador Field. Riley Conlan picked up two hits with an RBI while Albee Weiss added to his conference leading home run total with his 14th of the season. Charged with the loss, Walker Armstrong (1-2) worked 4.2 innings, struck out four batters and allowed five runs but only one earned run.
The Matadors led by three runs in the fifth inning but the Dirtbags would take advantage of a key CSUN error to score six in the frame and claim the series opener.Â
"Today was our opportunity to get out here and control the game a little bit. We didn't do that in the middle part," said head coach Greg Moore. "I thought we played well enough to win but we just didn't get it done at the end of the day. [Long Beach State] did a good job of capitalizing. We had too many free passes issued and they did a nice job of putting the ball in play after we did that. We didn't play catch in the [fifth inning] but that's going to happen. We have to steady it out and keep taking good at bats at the end of the game."
For the fifth consecutive conference game, the Matadors scored first in the opening inning, capitalizing off an early error committed by the Dirtbags. Joey Cooper led off the game by reaching on a Santino Rivera error. Cooper moved up to second base on a passed ball before later advancing to third on a groundout. Another passed ball would be committed at the plate allowing Cooper to touch home plate for the game's first run.
Armstrong cruised through the first four innings of the game, striking out four batters over that span. Facing the minimum in the first, Armstrong rebounded after an error to start the inning by inducing a double play off the bat Chris Jimenez. In the third, he allowed a one-out hit to Rivera, however, Casanova picked Rivera off the base paths with a quick throw to first base. Armstrong collected another double play in the fourth, which erased a one-out walk issued to Jarren Duran.Â
Two-out hitting in the fourth would lead to two more runs for the Matadors. Justin Toerner kept the inning alive with a line drive single up the middle. After Nolan Bumstead worked a walk, Conlan singled to left field to plate Toerner. Kevin Riley followed with a single through the right side to score a hustling Bumstead, giving the Matadors a 3-0 edge.Â
In the fifth, the Dirtbags climbed back into the game thanks to a key CSUN error. Armstrong allowed the first two batters to reach safely before he forced out a runner at third base on a bunt. Garrett Nelson stepped to the plate next and delivered a groundball to first base. RIley tried to turn two on the play but committed a throwing error, scoring a run. Rivera then hit an RBI single to cut the lead to one.
Two batters later, Armstrong walked Brooks Stotler but the final pitch of the at bat was mishandled at the plate, allowing the tying run to score from third base. The Dirtbags would take the lead on a two-run single from Jacob Hughey. A sixth run later came across on a wind-aided single from Jimenez that landed on the infield.Â
Long Beach State added to its lead in the seventh, capitalizing on a wild pitch from Tei Vanderford with the bases loaded. Starter Zak Baayoun kept the Matadors hitless over his last three innings of work on Friday. On the day, Baayoun tossed 7.0 innings, striking out seven batters while allowing three runs.Â
CSUN finally chipped away at the Dirtbags' four-run lead in the eighth. Casanova stroked a one-out single to center field in the frame before Weiss deposited a two-run blast well over the left center wall that trimmed the deficit to 7-5. The Matadors later threatened to score again in the inning as RIley faced Dirtbag closer Chris Rivera with runners at first and second base. Rivera though retired RIley on a deep flyout to left field.Â
In the ninth, Rivera retired the side in order to nail down the save and the victory for Long Beach State.Â
Five Matadors saw action out of the bullpen in the contest as Theron Kay and Hayden Shenefield hurled scoreless innings. Blake Schriever worked 1.1 innings, striking out two batters while allowing an unearned run.Â
Smacking his 36th career homer, Weiss moved into a fifth-place tie with Robert Fick on the Matadors' all-time home run list on Friday. He also pushed his career RBI total to 136, which is 10th all time in CSUN history.Â
The Matadors continue their series with the Dirtbags on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. An audio only broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call. Coverage starts at 12:45 p.m.Â
