CSUN Women's Tennis Wins Third In A Row

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN extended its winning streak to three with a 6-1 victory over Cal State LA in women's tennis dual action Monday afternoon.

The Matadors took the doubles point to begin the day. Monika Van de Vondel and Skyla Alcon defeated Elizaveta Sokolova and Isabella Lopez 6-2 at No. 1 while Emma Roenholt and Arpe Bagumyan were victorious 6-1 at No. 3.

"We started pretty quickly in doubles," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Our energy had a little lapse in the middle and we finished strong."

Bagumyan began singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Snezana Ivanovic at No. 5. Scout Shutter secured the dual victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own in the No. 6 matchup versus Layna Schwartz. Maria Taslagyan handed Mariko Sagara a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at No. 3 before Alicia Dinkelmeyer won her seventh straight singles match at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, against Sokolva.

Alcon won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 2 singles against Lopez before the Golden Eagles (7-11) recorded their lone victory, as Chelsey Ruiz defeated Roenholt 6-4, 6-3.

"I was really happy with the way with the way we competed in singles," Victor said. "It was nice to see Scout get a win after going through so much. She is the heart of our program. Arpe played very well today. Mari looked a lot better than she did last week, playing some of her best tennis. Skyla is getting better every match. Alicia is winning at one now. I think she is the first player in school history to start at number six and work her way into the number one position. She is someone you want to build a program going forward and we are really proud of her."

The Matadors (5-8, 1-2 Big West) return to league action Friday when CSUN hosts UC Irvine (8-11, 0-3 Big West) at 11 a.m.
