
Solid First Day for CSUN Women in Arizona

MARICOPA, Ariz. - The CSUN women's golf team fired rounds of 296-298 and is tied for seventh after two rounds of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Monday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
With a two-round total of 594, the Matadors came within six shots of their season-low for 36-holes. CSUNÂ carded a two-round total of 588 at the season-opening Battle at Old Works.
"Great team effort today," said CSUNÂ Head Coach Gina Umeck. "We've been setting small goals and checking them off these last few weeks. We're starting to see these smaller goals lead into bigger outcomes."
Senior Shenna DeLeon leads the Matadors after 36 holes at three-over 147 which matches her season-low. DeLeon, who is currently tied for 23rd, had an eagle on the par-five seventh on her way to a two-over 74 in round one before posting four birdies in round two's one-over 73.
DeLeon heads into Tuesday's final round just seven shots off the pace set by Pun Chanachai of New Mexico State who is the clubhouse leader at four-under 140.
Teammates Kayla Yn and Michelle Duan are a shot behind DeLeon as the Matador duo are tied for 29th at four-over 148. Yn had four birdies and and just three bogeys in postiing a season-low one-under 71 in round one. She then had two more birdies in the afternoon round to finish at five-over 77 for the round and four-over 148 for the tournament. Duan easily had her best 36 holes of the season after carding identical rounds of 74. Duan had four birdies and 24 pars on Monday.
CSUN's top scorer this season, Alice Duan struggled to a six-over round of 78 in the first round before bouncing back with a pair of birdies in a two-over 74 in the second round. Duan was even par through 12 holes in round two before bogeys at No. 1 and No. 2 dropped her to two-over 74.
Brooke Hamilton rounded out the Matador scoring as she is in 88th place at 15-over 159. Hamilton opened with a five-over 77 before closing Monday with a 10-over 82.
As a team, CSUNÂ is just four strokes out of the top five with 18 holes to be played Tuesday. Sacramento State (566) holds a holds a 14-shot lead in the team competition.
"We stayed composed during the second round when the wind picked up and made up some ground there," added Umeck. "Looking forward to tomorrow.'s round"
